Thorold, Ontario (July 14) For just the third time of the 2008 Season, Merrittville Speedway Officials were forced to cancel racing as late afternoon showers spoiled the Thorold Track’s 57th Anniversary Reunion Night Saturday July 12th.
The first two had come back during the month of May.
It was also the second time in a row that the event has been rain delayed.
The rain date for the Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shootout presented by dirttrackdigest.com including the Reunion Night and L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame Inductions is awaiting confirmation from Lucas Oil as to their availability.
“What can we say,” relates Reunion Committee Chairman Rick Kavanagh, “The Vintage Cars and Alumni had started to arrive … we went into the wait mode and then we have to postpone everything … why can’t it ever rain early in the day … it always has to be when we are open!”
“The Reunion Committee works pretty hard in the weeks leading up to the annual event,” adds Erica Bicknell, “doing all the planning and organizing and then everything falls apart … hopefully our race fans and teams can wait for the Wall of Fame and 50 lap Jerry Winger Memorial.”
Race Fans looking for information on Merrittville Speedway’s rain-delayed Reunion Night and the Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shootout should call the Speedway Office at 905-892-8266 or visit www.merrittvillespeedway.com after July 15th when a date is expected to be announced.
Since the Lucas Oil Shootout Series launch in 2006, it is the third time that a Merrittville Event has been rained out as the Sportsmen event met with similar fate that year.
Merrittville Speedway’s Reunion Committee is headed by Chairmen Rick Kavanagh, former drivers Ted Renshaw, Jeno Begolo and Terry Huffman, Mark and the Speedway ’s Erica Bicknell and Jim Irvine . Renshaw and Begolo are Wall of Fame Members while Kavanagh is the son of former Speedway owner Ken Kavanagh who is also a Wall of Fame Member.
Mark Swartz is the son of the late Bruce Swartz – a Wall of Fame Member and Charter Member of the Reunion Committee who passed away three seasons ago. The Committee recently lost Mark’s brother – Bruce Swartz Jr. who passed away this past spring.
Since the 40th Anniversary Season in 1991, Merrittville Speedway’s Reunion Committee has presented an annual Nostalgia Night with the assistance of L. St. Amand Enterprises, CAA Niagara, Ed MacPherson Construction and Philbrick Farm & Garden Equipment
