JJ GRASSO "THE JERSEY JET" HAS THREE WINS IN NINE URC STARTS IN 2008
At the start of each season, race teams determine if they are chasing
points or chasing feature wins.
For JJ Grasso of Pedricktown, NJ, his decision was clearly going after
feature wins. In fact, because of a limited budget, there was a chance
they would be missing a few URC shows along the way. So has the focus
changed nine races into the season?
After his convincing run Saturday night at New Egypt, where he took the
win with a half-lap lead over the second place car, it's safe to say
that Grasso is still going after feature wins. A interesting point is,
Grasso now finds himself fourth in the point chase and just 170 points
behind point leader Curt Michael. Grasso, at the age of 21 has stomped
many URC drivers of late. He has the right combination and set-up for
New Egypt Speedway and no one can touch him. With three URC events
presented at New Egypt, Grasso has a clean sweep taking all three
victories. Another way to measure his success is, Grasso has won
one-third of the URC races so far this season.
There is no doubt that this team operates on a budget. The car is at
least three years old and has seen many racing battles and wars. Most
nights, they run on used tires and their experience on set-ups has been,
learn as they go. Much if not all the work on the car is done by JJ
and his very dedicated father, John Grasso. The entire Grasso family is
engaged in this deal and honestly, they seem just slightly stunned by
the success. This team is a great example of hard work and dedication
paying dividends.
There is no doubt that fans gravitate to a youthful driver who will hang
it out with each turn. JJ does exactly that. He seems to prefer the
rim-riding outside line and at New Egypt, and at that place, it means
he's riding the guardrail. He'll thread his way through lapped traffic
with little or no effort. JJ Grasso will bring any race fan to edge of
their seat.
The Grasso team has either stumbled on the right set-up or, we might
just be watching the soon to be current day version of URC's Glenn
Fitzcharles or Dave Kelly.
JJ and team have re-considered their plans and will be racing with the
Rislone URC Sprint Series this weekend. Friday night, July 18 URC will
be at the Big Diamond Raceway followed by a return visit to Selinsgrove
Speedway on Saturday night, July 19. The Selinsgrove show will be the
completion of heats, the "B" Main and the 25 lap Jack Gunn Memorial
feature event that will pay $3,500 to the winner. This event was
cancelled earlier in the year after time trials were completed.
