Styres and Jones Tied for SOS Points Lead as Tour Returns to Ohsweken
by Tommy Goudge (July 15, 2008) - This Friday, July 18 the Southern Ontario Sprints return to the Ohsweken Speedway to headline Friday Night Thunder presented by the Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel. Ohsweken was the site of the 2nd event ever held in club history way back in 1996, and has been a staple on the SOS schedule ever since. More than 60 SOS events have been held at Ohsweken since that time, with Tilbury's Kyle Patrick taking the most recent SOS feature win at the Styres-family owned track, located on the 6 Nations of the Grand River First Nations reserve near Brantford, Ontario.
More work has taken place at the spacious 3/8's mile clay oval since the last SOS visit, and the track now features state of the art Musco lighting on all portions of the track, and vastly expanded spectator grandstands. The biggest change at Ohsweken, however, is the addition of weekly sprint car racing at the Speedway, and many of the Speedway's regular sprint car competitors are expected to be on hand this Friday to defend their home turf against the travelling teams, while others have been competing full time both at Ohsweken and with the SOS series this year.
Current Ohsweken points leader Keith Dempster of Alton is also 5th in SOS points, while SOS co-point leader Styres is 4th in the Ohsweken standings. Bob Crawford and Ryan Hunsinger have also been competing full time in both Ohsweken and SOS events, and Hunsinger enters this Friday as one of the favourites, having taken the most recent sprint car feature win at Ohsweken in dramatic fashion over Dempster last week, moving to 2nd in Ohsweken points in the process. Hunsinger, who recently moved to Brantford, won his first career sprint car feature in weekly competition at Ohsweken earlier in the season, and also sits 12th in the SOS standings despite missing the season opening SOS event, and going out of competition at the Brockville SOS event due to mechanical problems. Hunsinger competed in 3 SOS events way back in 2001, but is still considered a rookie this season, and is in contention to win the Rookie of the Year awards at Ohsweken and with the SOS tour. Crawford, meanwhile, is quietly having another of his trademark consistent seasons, as the Sutton resident is 5th in Ohsweken points and 6th in SOS points.
Just when you thought the Southern Ontario Sprints points race couldn't get any closer, Demorestville's Chris Jones and Ohsweken Speedway co-owner Styres proved otherwise last Saturday. Rain postponed the feature race at Brighton Speedway, but before the wet stuff interfered, Jones drove from 6th on the grid to win the 2nd heat race of the evening, while Styres started 7th and finished 2nd behind the Jones #11j. Jones entered the evening 1 point behind Styres for the points lead, but has now drawn even with Styres thanks to the the heat race victory. The postponed feature has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 9, creating double features for the SOS, as a regular night of heats, a dash race, and feature were already scheduled at Brighton that night.
