Jeremy Wins One For Brock

East Smethport, PA…It was an emotion filled Victory Lane at McKean County Raceway on Saturday night when Jeremy Wonderling met the Young Family to accept the Brock Young Memorial trophy.

Jeremy Wonderling and Brock Young were members of the Scio Speed Society. They were high school friends who work worked on the race cars all week and then raced against each other on weekends. That ended when Young lost his life in a highway crash in 2002.

The Young family and the management of McKean County Raceway have kept the memories alive with the annual Brock Young Memorial. One for Brock (his race car number was 22) is the “story” behind the $1-4-22 winner’s share that was paid to Wonderling.

Wonderling won this event in 2004 when the apparent race winner was DQed for a technical infraction. That night there was no Scio Speed Society celebration in victory circle. Last night they were all there. Three generations of Youngs, three generations of Wonderlings, the Dunham brothers, and about 100 others all delighted for Wonderling and grieving with the Youngs.

Wonderling started 12th, took the lead from Glenn Whritenour on lap 10, and never looked back. Caution on laps 18 and 24 gave others a shot at Wonderling’s Terry Prince Contracting – Roots Water Systems Shaw Monte Carlo, but nobody had anything for Mr. Excitement on this special night.

The race got off to an ugly start when the lead cars tangled as they entered turn three of the first lap. The end result was John Waters taking a wild ride off the track in a series of flips. Waters was OK, but the car was heavily damaged. Jim Johnson was sent to the rear for his involvement in the incident.

When the race resumed Glenn Whritenour owned the number one spot. That was the spot that everyone else wanted. Jeff Chesebro worked both inside and outside attempting to wrestle the lead from Whritenour, but without success. Soon Chesebro has Steve Dixon working on him for second. Then from 12th comes Mr. Excitement. One by one he wore them down and on lap 10 Tommy Elder’s score board showed 3j, 15, and 97.

Then the race many were watching was between Chesebro and Dixon. These two are on top of Series point standings and both were looking for repeat 2008 Series wins. Late in the race Dixon did get by Chesebro, but time had run out.
