ROOKIE DAVID GRAVEL IS THE FIRST TO THE CHECKER FLAG, JASON CLAUSS TAKES
THE URC FEATURE WIN FRIDAY NIGHT AT BIG DIAMOND
The Rislone URC Sprint Series invaded the Big Diamond Raceway on Friday
night a big crowd was on hand as thirty-one sprint cars took part in the
racing program. Seventeen year old rookie driver David Gravel from
Watertown, CT had a perfect night going after winning his heat race and
leading the entire twenty-five lap distance in the feature event.
However, in post race teching, Gravel was denied the victory due to a
engine infraction. Second place driver Jason Clauss of Boyertown, PA
was in the right place at the right time, eventually earing the URC
sprint feature victory. For Clauss, it was his first win of the season
and fourth career event is part of the Valley Forge INC Mini Sprint
Series.
Three ten lap qualifying heat race events were presented to determing
the starting field in the twenty-five lap feature with victories going
to rookie drivers Rory Janne, David Gravel as veteran Kramer Williamson
was the winner of the third heat race. In the Don Ott "B" Main, Brett
Schoenly was the winner.
A field of twenty-five URC sprints cars took the green flag to start the
feature event with David Gravel setting the early pace. Upon the
completion of lap one, the yellow flag was displayed for Ed Aikin who
stopped in turn three. On the restart, Brett Schoenly spun bringing the
caution out once again. On the restart, Gravel ran to hide from the
rest of the field , then the red flag was displayed on lap four when
Josh Weller and Mark Bitner flipped with the cars of Kyle Purks, Tim
Hogue, Curt Michael and Dave Ely also involved. The green flag fell
again to restart race and Gravel was off and running. Jason Clauss ran
second as Rookie driver Rory Janne was holding down third as Kramer
Williamson and Robbie Stillwaggon made up the top five.
Davey Sammons, running strong in the top ten spun and tapped the third
turn wall on lap eleven. Gravel was getting the caution flags at all
the right times, avoiding the lapped traffic at the end of the field.
Also on a strong run was Becca Anderson now chasing down the top five.
On lap eighteen the yellow flag was displayed for Rory Janne who stopped
on the homestretch. Janne was racing in third at the time and a great
ride quickly came to an end.
With six laps to go, everyone was watching the rookie driver set a
blistering pace, but suddenly, Becca Anderson and the Bar's Leaks
sprinter were in the chase and racing in third in the closing laps. At
one point, Anderson made a strong bid for second but Clauss held on to
the runner-up spot.
As the checker flag fell, David Gravel was the first to dash under the
wire followed by Jason Clauss, Becca Anderson, Curt Michael and Kramer
Williamson. In post racing teching, a motor infraction was the cause
of the disqualification of the car driven by David Gravel. Jason Clauss
was the official race winner.
Top performances of the night go out to Becca Anderson for a solid
second place finish. Point leader Curt Michael turned around a bad
night. Michael failed to qualify through his heat race then lost the
rear of his sprinter in the "B" Main. Michael joined the feature
line-up using his provisional. Michael then got caught up in the fourth
lap red flag were he sustained top win damage and completely lost his
front wing. Restarting at the rear of the field and racing without a
front wing, Michael delivered an outstanding third place finish.
Michael also earned the Fred's Trailer Parts Hard Charge Award,
advancing twenty-one positions in the feature event.
