Four drivers visit Attica victory lane for 1st time in 2008 - Shaffer, Foos, Deisenroth, Ball
ATTICA, Ohio - The feature winners in all four divisions visited victory
lane for the first time in 2008 at Attica Raceway Park Friday on Kear's
Speed Shop, American Power Sports of Findlay Night, July 18.
Alliquippa, Pennsylvania's Tim Shaffer continued his hot streak of late,
taking the 410 sprint victory. It marks the third win this month since
taking over the duties of the Aaron Call Motorsports #83.
"The track was tricky tonight, but Brian (Kemenah) had the car perfect. This
win goes out to Brian's sister (Lori Havens) who was hurt pretty badly today
in a car crash," said Shaffer beside the Kistler Race Products, Ray Tech
Industries backed J&J Chassis. "I didn't know if I could get around Byron
(Reed)...he was pretty strong. I could get to him and I just tried to rattle
his cage a little and it worked," added Shaffer who took the lead on lap 10
when Reed drove over the cushion in turn four and spun.
Fremont, Ohio's D.J. Foos - an 18-year-old rookie - led all 25 laps and held
off a late race challenge by Todd Heuerman to score his first career sprint
car feature win.
"I can't thank my dad, mom and brother Matt for all they have done to get me
here. This is pretty awesome. I saw that 18 car and thought 'I'm going to
lose this thing at the end.' He slid under me and it was just like running
the go-karts...I just had to be patient and let him slide up the track and I
could drive under him," said Foos beside his Burger King, Fremont Auto
Parts/NAPA backed sprint car.
Oak Harbor, Ohio's Curtis Deisenroth was so close to breaking into victory
lane last week at "Ohio's Finest Racing" speedplant, only to be edged out at
the checkered. He wasn't to be denied this week, as he led all 20 laps to
score his first career feature win in the Service Drive Solutions UMP Attica
Late Models.
"I knew we had a pretty good chance after getting so close last week. I have
to thank my family and all my great sponsors - B2B Racing, Zeller Towing,
Z-Graphics and Riverside Machine for all their help," said Deisenroth.
Veteran Tiffin, Ohio racer Art Ball, the defending Attica Raceway Park track
champion in the dirt truck division, finally found victory lane in 2008,
grabbing the lead on lap four and not looking back.
"We took the carberator off the old truck and put it on this and that made
all the difference....the motor ran a whole lot better," said Ball beside
his Pierce Engineering, Magers Lumber, Chaney Roffing backed #01.
In the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, defending ARP champion Byron Reed shot
into the early lead with Brian Smith, Shaffer and Mike Hogan battling for
second. Shaffer would move into the runner-up spot on the second circuit,
but Reed pulled away. By lap 9, Shaffer began closing on Reed, who would
bounce over the ledge in turn four and spin a lap later, handing the point
to Shaffer.
Shaffer would pull away while a great battle shaped up for second behind
Smith - in a new ride - David Harrison and Brandon Martin. Shaffer would hit
lapped traffic by the 20th circuit, allowing Smith, Martin and Harrison to
close. Shaffer would catch a break on lap 23 when the yellow flew for a
Craig Mintz spin, giving "The Steel City Outlaw" a clear track.
While Shaffer pulled away, all eyes were on 20th starter Greg Wilson who had
worked his way up to fifth by the 24th lap. Smith would surrender second to
Martin as the duo were locked up in a great battle with Wilson with just two
laps remaining.
At the checkered, Shaffer won handily with Wilson's great run from last to
the front got him to second with Martin, SMith and Harrison rounding out the
top five.
At the drop of the green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Foos would hug
the bottom with Coty Runion on his rear bumper and Brad Haudenschild
bounding of the top ledge. The car on the move was 7th starter Heuerman who
battled Haudenschild for third until grabbing the position by the 10th lap
and move into second a circuit later.
Following a lap 14 caution, the race would go green the remaining 11 laps
with Foos not budging from the bottom and Heuerman blasting to his outside.
Heuerman got a great run off turn four on the 23rd lap and pulled in front
of Foos as he tried to break the youngster's momentum by diving low into
turn one. However, Heuerman's slid up the track and Foos drove back under to
retain the lead and go on to the win. Heuerman, Runion, Nate Dussel and
Haudenschild would round out the top five.
Deisenroth looked smooth out front of the 20-lap late model main while Noah
Wagner, Ryan Missler and Wayne Maffett Jr. duked it out for second. Disaster
struck for Wagner on lap 8 as he spun. Deisenroth would continue to lead
with Missler and Maffett swapping the second place every lap. Both would get
one more shot at Deisenroth thanks to a lap 18 caution.
Deisenroth got a great restart and went on to the win with Maffett, Missler,
Jeff McCoy and Jim Gingery rounding out the top five.
Chester Fitch took the early lead in the 15-lap dirt truck main with a
exciting battle behind between Brian Arnold, Steve Endicott, Cory Ward and
Ball. Ball would move from fourth into the lead by lap 4 as Fitch began to
fade. The only yellow flew on lap 6 with Ball leading Arnold, Endicott, Dave
Brewer and Ward. Ball would not move from his low line despite several
strong challenges from Endicott, Arnold, Ward and Brewer.
Ball would go on to score his eighth career dirt truck win at Attica with
Endicott, Ward, Brewer and Arnold rounding out the top five.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action for Christmas in July, Friday,
July 25 on Smith Family Frosted Foods Night. Santa will be on hand to hand
out many gifts for kids. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing underway at 8 p.m.
