Robertson Makes It Three in a Row at Woodhull Raceway, VanPelt Brothers Sweep Again

Woodhull, NY… The 78 mile drive from McKean County Raceway to the high banks of Woodhull couldn’t slow Wayne Robertson’s third trip in a row to Woodhull’s victory lane. The defending track champion ran the BRP Can-Am Series race at McKean and then hightailed to the high banks to pick up win number five of the season on Woodhull’s Christmas in July night. LJ Kennedy Trucking and Southern Tier Coal sponsored the evening’s events as 65 children’s bikes were given away by Santa and Mrs. Claus.
So far the 2008 season has been an exhibition of domination as one of the brothers VanPelt has been wheeling their Ted White Racing machines to victory lane each and every week. Curt and Billy have monopolized the LJ Kennedy 358 Modified victory lane, and Saturday night was no exception. Billy VanPelt grabbed the lead early in the feature and kept command despite heavy lap traffic to take home the victory. As has been the pattern as of late, brother Curt VanPelt followed Billy across the line for second, giving them yet another weekend seep. Steve Hartman Jr. continued his string of strong runs by gathering up a solid third. Stacy Jackson led the feature early, only to fade to fourth by the drop of the checkers. Frank Dunning wheeled his way to fifth.
Defending co-champion Bill Brewer jumped to the early lead in the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman feature. Fellow co-champion Kenny peoples Jr. gave chase as AJ Costley was once again working the extreme high side of the raceway in third. Multiple caution flags early in the race kept Brewer from opening up a big lead and allowed multi-feature winner Donnie Lawson to slice his way through the pack. Peoples and Brewer continue to battle side by side lap after lap, with Costley not giving up the high line, riding third. Lawson soon entered the top five and began to pick of positions, one by one. Lawson passed under both Art Goodier and Costley on the low side and then set sail for the two leaders. As Brewer and Peoples drove hard into turn three side by side, Lawson pulled his machine to the very low side of the track and made the double pass to take the lead. Once Lawson had command of the race, he set sail to yet another victory. Brewer held off Peoples for second, with Costley hanging tough on the outside for fourth. Goodier rounded out the top five. It was a clean sweep of the evening for Lawson, as he won the make-up feature earlier in the evening, with Brewer once gain claiming the runner-up position.
The 360 Late Model feature saw a few competitors making the evening haul from the BRP Can-Am series race at McKean County to start scratch in the feature race at Woodhull. Point leader Glenn Whritenour, Wayne Robertson and Larry Knowles all did double duty on Saturday night, and all ended up in the top five in the Woodhull main event. Woodhull regular Mike Smith bolted to the lead early, with Bill Williams closely in tow. Robertson wasted no time, quickly slicing his way through the field and was challenging Williams for second by lap five. Knowles was following suit, as he followed Roberson up through the ranks and was soon running fourth. Robertson cleared Williams for second and then drew up along Smith for the lead. Smith bobbled on the high side of turn four and Robertson motored in to the lead and off to victory lane. Smith held off the charging Larry Knowles for second. Point leader Glenn Whritenour was also able to make his way to the top five, wheeling the car normally piloted by Fred Amann, and claimed fourth. Bill Williams held tight for the fifth spot.
Morgan’s Auto Repair point leader Brian Knowles picked up his fourth victory of the season, holding off defending champion Dan Gordon. Knowles padded his point lead, by winning both the feature and his heat race, which earned him another five bonus points. Veteran Jeff Smith rebounded from a few bad weeks to wheel his #40 home in third. Rookie Brett Marlatt put on an impressive drive, coming from his 18th place starting position to garnish fourth. Zack Sutton edged Mike Williams out at the line for fifth.
There’s nothing like a first time winner and Signs Plus Mini Stock driver Jeff Brown held off some tough company to pick up his first ever feature win. Brown held off advances from multi-feature winner Rich Sharpsteen III as well as veteran Ed Mills, as the top five cars stayed nose to tail for the entire 20 lap event. As Brown crossed the stripe with his first victory, Mills edged Sharpsteen for the runner-up position. Brian Grant Sr. methodically worked his way through the pack to take home fourth, with “Mighty” Mike Smith claiming the last spot ion the top five.
Following the first time winner theme, Tom McGlynn took advantage of his pole position start to run to the checkers in the LaBarron Brothers Front Wheel Drive division. The win did not come easy, as defending champion Ron Daily Jr. applied heavy pressure on the #36 machine late in the race. Daily could do not better than second, though as RT Moshier turned around a string of bad luck to cross the line in third. Brian Grant Jr. edged Mark Schenck for fourth, as the top five cars all crossed the finish line nose to tail in what was possibly the most exciting race of the evening.
Next week the Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks run their make-up race from the Jim Williams Memorial show, with the S&W Crate Sportsman set to go extra laps in their special feature event.
