Sarver, PA (July 24, 2008) With just five weeks left in the Fab Four schedule of the 40th Anniversary Season of Don Martin’s Lernerville Speedway, the chase for the Budweiser Points Championships are tightening up in all four divisions.
The closest race is in the Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprints where Bob Felmlee holds a three point lead over Two-time Defending Track Champion Kevin Schaeffer. Schaeffer tightened the race this past Friday with a thrilling win over Mike Lutz in the last lap of the feature. Both drivers have feature wins to their credit this season and this race appears to be headed down to the wire. Rod George is still lurking within striking distance in third place just 24 points behind Felmlee. Brent Matus and Scott Priester are tied for fourth, but neither seems to be a factor for the Championship at this point. Ed Lynch Jr. sits sixth in points, but has missed a couple races and will likely miss one more for his annual pilgrimage to the Sprint Car Capital of the World for the Knoxville Nationals.
Defending Friedman’s Freshmarkets UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model Track Champion Alex Ferree sits atop the Bud Points and is fresh of his second feature win of the season. The model of consistency, Ferree has nine top ten finishes in eleven events, with an additional top ten finish and just one DNF. Five-time Track Champion Lynn Geisler sits just 33 points out of the lead despite a recent run of bad luck. The red hot Mike Blose is just ten points behind Geisler in third. This also appears to be a three-horse race, as Ferree will not have the points locked up by early August like he did last season. Gary Lyle and John Flinner are separated by one point for fourth place, but will probably not factor into the title hunt unless something dramatic happens to the top three.
Brian Swartzlander is the Reigning Track Champion in the Ferrante Motor Cars DIRTcar Modifieds and has five overall Modified titles to his credit, but is locked into a dogfight with two-time champion Kevin Bolland. Despite winning five features so far this season, Swartzlander cannot shake Bolland who has chipped 21 points off the points lead in the last month and sits just 19 points behind Swartzlander. Last year’s runner-up Del Rougeux Jr. has been struggling through some motor issues and bad luck and does not appear to be in contention for a championship at this point. The closest race in the Ferrante Modified points is for fourth place with three drivers (Tom Winkle, Jeremiah Shingledecker and Two-time Track Champion Dave Murdick) separated by just five points.
There will definitely be a new champion crowned in the Advance Auto Points UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks as 2007 Champion Mike Pegher Jr. has focused more of his attention on his Lynn Geisler-owned #1 Cochran Crate Late Model venture this season. As usual, the Street Stock Championship is totally up for grabs with four to six drivers still in the hunt. Six-time Champion Joe Kelley leads the Bud Standings by 31 points over Jason Fosnaught. Bob Egley and Wayne Carbo sit just seven and twelve points behind Fosnaught. Greg Beach and Pat Hanley are tied for fifth, but with the wide-open, anyone-can-win atmosphere of the Street Stock division, neither is eliminated from the points race yet!
All four divisions will be in competition tomorrow and each of the following four Friday Nights as the 40th Anniversary Season nears the final checkered flag. Tomorrow night the Ferrante Motor Cars DIRTcar Modifieds will be showcased in the Joe Pitkavish Memorial, a 30-lap race with lap money and a bonus for the leader of lap 15.
