Frankie Herr Wins Williams Grove Super Sportsman Feature
Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Frankie Herr, from Carlisle, won the 20-lap Sutliff Auto Group super sportsman feature Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway. Herr led every lap on the way to recording his first victory of the season.
The super sportsman feature field was set by time trials. Herr had the fastest time and started on the pole with Rich Eichelberger on the outside. Herr and Eichelberger pulled away from the field in the early laps.
Following a fourth lap restart Frankie Herr drove away from Rich Eichelberger. Eichelberger had to contend with the challenges from John Stoner. While Eichelberger and Stoner fought for second, Herr stretched out his lead.
Despite a caution flag with seven laps remaining, Herr was never seriously challenged. He cruised to his initial win of 2008, winning by seven lengths over Eichelberger, Stoner, Paul Miller and Bobby Hockenberry.
McSherrytown’s Bobby Beard won the 20-lap AJ’s Truck and Trailer Center 358 late model feature. Beard came from the middle of the field to win his fourth of the year.
D.J. Mease was the early leader of the feature. Randy Croop advanced from his fifth starting position to second. After a lap six restart Croop passed Mease to claim the lead.
As Croop captured the lead position, Bobby Beard gained fourth place. Beard, the current points leader in the 358 late models, started the feature in 12th place.
The race was slowed by a lap nine caution. Following the restart Beard took the lead from Croop in turn four. Croop battled back and regained the lead coming off the second turn. Beard’s winning move came off the exit of turn four.
Once in front Bobby Beard pulled away from Croop. Beard won the race by 12 lengths over Croop, Derrick Zirkle, Mease and Craig Wagaman.
Mark Digges made his first start of the year in the Credit Connection four-cylinders. His first trip on the Williams Grove half-mile resulted in a feature win.
Kevin Thomas started on the pole for the beginning of the 15-lap four-cylinder main. Thomas took command of the lead on the first lap. While Thomas set the pace the driver on the move was Mark Digges. Digges started 12th and by the end of lap three he was second.
Digges, the current Winchester Speedway four-cylinder points leader, made his winning pass of Thomas on the fifth circuit. Once in front Digges was not challenged the final ten laps. He easily won the race in front of Thomas, Dave Leidy, Ed Hollenbach and Gary Kreiser.
Chris Heller won the 30-lap enduro main. Heller dominated the race and won his first of the year at Williams Grove.
