TWO NIGHTS OF ACTION AND 3 HONOURED

Brighton Speedway hosted a double night of racing on August 1 & 2nd, despite Mother Nature’s dampening of the 1/3 mile clay oval. $5.00 Friday Nights presented by Holiday Inn and the Saturday night Apex Sandblasting and Painting presented the Brighton Automotive Mid Season Championships, including the Wall of Fame Induction, provided fans with dirt flying, pedal to the metal racing action.

The highlight of Friday Night was the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified One on One Tournament of Champions. With sixteen drivers pitted in the head to head, two lap race offs, fans were witness to the drivers and machines working their hardest to win the coveted prize. After solid performances by all drivers, the final race had 11th place rookie driver Brandon Gregory (#01), of Trenton, starting next to point leader Andrew Hennessy (#87), of Picton. Both drivers were solid in the corners, but Gregory pulled to the lead and the victory when the 2 laps were finished. “The car ran awesome, I held my line and it was a good night of racing. Hopefully it is a sign for tomorrow night, “said Gregory after the event.

Gregory didn’t fair as well in Saturday Night’s APEX Sandblasting and Painting presentation of the Brighton Automotive Mid Season Championship, when he experienced some mechanical difficulties and finished 12th. The car to watch was Jason McCrory (#49) of Brighton, who after finishing first in his qualifier started on the pole and drove into Victory Lane after regaining the lead from Elmer Stevenson (#10), of Trenton in the second last lap. He was continuously challenged throughout the race by Scott Reid (#K5), of Brighton.

Reid had many friends and family on hand as his father, the late racing legend Danny Reid, was inducted onto the Brighton Speedway Wall of Fame. The elder K5 was joined on the wall by driver Larry Stacey, the original 007, and former starter Art Whitney. The pre race ceremony reminded everyone how grassroots motorsport racing has been part of the Northumberland-Quinte area for more than 40 years.

The next race event, scheduled for August 9th, is the Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 presentation of the Fast and Furious Weekend. The packed program includes the Southern Ontario Sprints who return for a Double Feature event as they make up the rained out feature from their July visit. All four of Brighton’s regular classes will hit the tight bullring for a night of fantastic family entertainment. The Green Flag flies at 7pm.
