KNOXVILLE, IA – Brian Brown’s Thursday night literally went up in smoke when in the closing laps of the A-Main his Super Clean No.21 caught fire. Brown rebounded to capture Friday night’s feature.
Brown captured the win in the myracelife.com 20-lap non-qualifiers feature to win $5,000 at the 48th Annual Super Clean Knoxville Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.
“This Super Clean Maxim was real strong tonight,” stated Brown after the win. “We haven’t had the best of years and I want to thank my fans and sponsors for sticking behind me. Hopefully we’ll be able to make our way through the alphabet soup tomorrow night.”
Brown started on the front row of the event and fell into second on the initial start but that was negated when Justin Zimmerman and Brian Ellenberger came together in turn one.
On the second start, Brown beat pole-sitter, Blake Feese into turn one on the topside of the speedway to assume command of the event.
At the halfway point, Brown continued to lead with Mark Dobmeier running in the second spot trying to close in as Brown battled with slower traffic.
Brown was the leader when the caution came out on lap 19 for Cody Darrah. Darrah had been running in the top ten when the left rear tire on his No.89 went south. This set up a green-white-checker finish.
“When your coming down the back straightaway to the checkered you never want to see a yellow,” stated Brown. “We haven’t won here in so long I think I forgot where Victory Lane was.”
On the restart, Brown again pulled away while Kerry Madsen moved into the runner-up position after coming out of the B-Main. Madsen did all he could to track down Brown but he just ran out of laps putting him second in the final run down.
“I had a ball tonight to be honest,” stated Madsen. “I think I let my tires get a little too cold there under the caution and I lost a little grip.”
Dobmeier, of Grand Forks, N.D., came to the line in third with Seth Brahmer, of Wiser, N.E., took the checked in fourth. Brian Paulus, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., rounded out the top five.
Five heats were held with Brown, Feese, Seth Brahmer, Dobmeier and Rob Chaney capturing victories. Tim Shaffer took home the honors in the B-Main. The C-Main was not run as a result of the large number of scratches for the evening.
