BRIAN WEAVER CLAIMS SEASON FIRST PENN CAN WIN, CRAMBO, PAYNE, GREEN, HOOVER, AND GRASSO ALSO WIN

Susquehanna, PA..Seven time Penn Can Speedway champion Brian Weaver of Windsor, New York, has had a frustrating season thus far in 2008 at a track where wins would come on a regular basis in past seasons. Friday night after waiting out several rain delays, Weaver broke out of his slump and claimed a hard fought win over Alan and Jeff Rudalavage. In the companion sportsman feature 2007 speedway champion, Jeff Crambo made a late race pass on Tim Howell to claim another win. Frank Payne was able to claim another super stock win while Butch Green and John Hoover won in the pure stocks and four cylinder. J.J. Grasso thrilled the sprint car fans by dominating the URC Sprint feature winning both his heat and feature event on a night sponsored by BPG Motorsports and Main Engines.

Bernie Griffin and Mike Nagel lead the twenty four car modified field to the green with Nagel taking the early lead. Early cautions kept the field together with Brian Weaver getting by Nagel for the lead on lap five. Cautions for stopped cars twice on lap nine held the field in check with Weaver out front followed by Alan Rudalavage, Mike Colsten, Nagel, Joey Grammes, and Dan Vauter.

A long green flag period followed with Weaver holding the point. Positions shifted lap after lap. Alan Rudalavage followed Weaver through lap traffic while Colsten, Grammes, Vauter, and Jeff Rudalavage tried everything to gain positions on the lead two cars. The last caution of the race came out on lap twenty six for the spun cars of Joey Grammes and Mike Colsten ending their good runs for the night. This set up a four lap dash with Weaver out front followed by both Rudalavage machines, Vauter, Nagel, and Garth Tonkin Jr. Weaver held on for the win while Alan Rudalavage held off his brother for second. Vauter got fourth with Nagel rounding out the top five.

Jamie Cortazar used his outside pole starting position to jump out to the early lead in the sportsman feature event. Cortazar led the first six circuits before Penn Can rookie Tim Howell used an inside move to get by the leader coming out of turn two. Howell and Cortazar battled for the top position lap after lap while the strong cars of Jeff Crambo, Les Gillette, and Mike Nagel Jr worked their way through the pack. A lap twelve caution brought the field back together for the final restart of the night. Howell continued to lead with Crambo moving by Cortazar into the runner-up spot on lap fifteen. Crambo then went after Howell for the top spot. Howell fought Crambo off lap after lap. With the two lap signal out, Crambo got a run down the backstretch to take the lead. Howell tried his best to fight back only to come up short. Cortazar, Grant Hilfiger, and Nagel rounded out the top five.

Frank Payne has had some recent bad luck at the speedway. This gave him an outside front row starting spot in the super stock feature. Payne jumped to the front and would stay there the entire race. Fred Christ was Payne’e early race challenger with Tom Herman and Chris Strohl following. The battle was on all race long for the second position as Payne keep his mount out front. Christ’s great run ended with a spin bring out the caution on lap eighteen. The field was together for the restart but Payne had the car and went on for the win. Herman, Strohl, Pat Nolan, and Doug Polhamus competed the top five.

2007 Penn Can pure stock champion, Butch Green, started the feature event in the sixth position. It only took him one lap to get to the lead. Tom Garren and Rich Green both moved through the field into second and third. With a few mid race cautions, the stage was set for a great three car battle. With only a few lap remaining Rich Green dove to the bottom of the speedway in between three and four looking to get the lead only to spin trying. This set up a two lap dash. Butch Green would hold of Garren for the win with Ryan Stone coming through for third. Carl Shimer had his career best fourth place finish with Rich Green coming back for fifth.

John Hoover was another man on a mission in the four cylinder feature starting in the eighth position. It would take just two laps for Hoover to get the lead. The man making the moves during the mid stages of the race was point leader, Gary Kinne. With Hoover out front, Kinne chased him down and pulled to his bumper. Kinne tried all the angles to get by Hoover only to come up short. Hoover got another win with Kinne second followed by Chris Taylor, Beezer Wilkie, and Dan Wood.

JJ Grasso was the strongest car of the twenty four starters in the URC Sprint Car feature event. Former Penn Can URC winner Scott Pursell was the early leader with Grasso waiting for the right time to make his move. With the first twenty laps running caution free, the leaders experienced lap traffic early. Grasso made the best of the traffic getting by Purcell on lap nine. With Grasso leading and Purcell second, another former Penn Can sprint winner, Tim Hogue was making moves to the front. The first caution waved on lap twenty for contact between Howard Singer and Becca Anderson. This set up a dash for the flag. While attempting to pass Purcell for second, Hogue’s car slowed and brought out the second caution. Another quick red appeared when Danny Massy hopped a wheel and flipped. Grasso stayed strong and got his first Penn Can win.

PENN NOTES: The track crew lead by Al Wilcox did a great job getting the track back after a brief shower before hot laps and again during the sprint heats. Next week the Tobias Speedstrs and Slingshot will make an appearance at the speedway. Expected to be on hand for the race are NASCAR owner Ray Everham and Erin Croker in their Speedstrs. Also expected are Gary Heiber and Rich Tobias along with local driver Nick Pecko of Forest City .
