Hough Holds On, Quinn Takes the High Road, Lavoy Makes Dramatic Return

West Lebanon, NY: The weather was finally cooperating for an exciting night of action packed racing at the Valley of Speed. Teams, drivers, and the fans came loaded for bare as the heat of the day turned to the heat on the high banks as Sabic Innovative Plastics, Keybank, and Conklin Limestone presented a full card of events that included the 3rd round of the King of the Track Mid-Summer Shootout.
Also the NYSSCA contingents were on tap for there NYSSCA Safety Award night giving the top 2 NYSSCA Members a cash award in each division.
First on the night was the 30 lap Sabic Innovative Plastics, Keybank Big Block Modified main event. At the front of the field was the #24S of Rich Salisbury and the #34H of Steve Hough. At the drop of the green flag, Salisbury lead the field into to turn 1, but never made it to turn 2 as heavy contact between Hough and Salisbury sending the #24S into the outside wall.
After a lengthy delay in resetting the field, the green was displayed once again, this time a full lap was in the books before the yellow flew once again for the #98 of Eddie Marshall. Cautions flew again on lap 2 for Matt Quinn, and lap 5 for a spinning Mike King.
Once the field got a number of laps in the books, the #34H of Steve Hough was out front and in control of the field. The #42 of Guy Sheldon was in hot pursuit even though the car was damaged and off center. But that didn’t seem to bother Sheldon as he powered on trying to run down Hough.
The caution flew again for the #21J of Jeff Trombley as he slowed on the front stretch with mechanical trouble. Then again the yellow flew on lap 15 for the #87X of Paul Gilardi. While all these yellows and positions battles were taking place, the likes of J.R. Heffner, Kenny Tremont and Brian Berger were sneaking up through the field trying to get a shot at the #34H.
Every position was battled back and forth throughout the field but no one had anything for Hough, as the #34H crossed the line 1st followed by the #42 of Sheldon. Heffner quietly worked his way into 3rd, Tremont survived for 4th, and Brian Berger battled his way to a 5th place finish.
Tremont leads the King of the Track standings by a mere 2 points over Sheldon, and another 2 over Heffner as of 3 of 4 events.
Also on tap was the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series as a special $2,000 to win Shootout presented by Conklin Limestone Companies 24 lap event. On the front row was the #24S of Salisbury and the #8 of Jim VanAnden. VanAnden was out front early in the feature event, but caution flew early for contact with the #51 and the #171.
At the green the #8 was out front again, but was short lived as the #4 of Andy Bachetti powered around the high side and took over the top spot by the end of the backstretch. But Bachetti’s lead was again short lived as mechanical trouble sent him pitside with a failed coil.
That handed over the lead to the #34H of Steve Hough on lap 3. Hough had control of the field for a number of laps as the usual suspects of Quinn, Tremont and Heffner made their way through the field to get a shot at Hough. The challengers were going to get their chance as the caution flew on the 15th lap. At the restart, Quinn was poised in the runner-up spot to take advantage of any opening Hough left.
But Hough was doing everything right as the caution flew again with just one lap remaining. As the green flew again, Quinn stayed right in the tracks of the #34H. As the leaders ran down the backstretch, Hough blocked the middle and bottom, so Quinn took the high road, and powered around Hough going in to turn three in dramatic fashion.
At the checkers, Quinn scores the win with the last lap pass, and the $2,000 payday. Hough held on for 2nd, followed by Tremont, Tom Faxon, and Heffner rounded out the top 5.
The full card of action continued with the Pro Stocks, as the full fendered warriors took to the high banks for their 20 lap feature event. And just like the other classes, the green flag was quickly followed by the yellow as a crash in turns 1 and 2 slowed the field.
Once the incident was cleaned up, the #315 of Jon Routhier took control of the field and stayed out front for a dozen laps until the #5 of Chris Crews powered by Routhier to take over out front. Once Crews got in the clean air, the #5 set sail for the checkered flag.
At the checkers, Crews captures the win, followed by a hard charging Robbie Speed. Kevin Arnold held on to finish 3rd, Routhier settle for 4th, and Paul LaRochelle battled to finish 5th.
The last card on the bill was the Sportsman division 20 lap feature event. At the point was the #3 of Kim Lavoy and the #16 of Kyle Hoffman. The green flag flew and Lavoy powered out front of the field and took control.
Back in the field the #12 of Brian Sandstedt showed his prowles and charged into 2nd by the time they reached the backstretch on lap 1.
The first caution slowed the field on lap 9 as the #25 of Frank Harper made significant contact with the turn 3 wall. The field gathered back up for another restart and Lavoy held on to the lead once again. Contact in turn 2 caused the #23 of Kevin Winters to climb the turn 2 fence, while the field slowed, the #24 of Kevin Petrucci broke and came to rest in turn 3.
Lavoy still had the field covered, and Sandstedt just could not get a solid run to keep the pressure on the #3. At the checkers, Lavoy captures her 2nd career win followed by Sandstedt, Kyle Hoffman held on for 3rd, Ed Harkins powered into 4th, and Neil Stratton charged to 5th.
Scott Kilmer won the 10 lap Limited Pro Stock feature event, while in the other full fendered action, the Pure Stock features were won by: PS#1 - Dave Stickles, PS#2 - Shannon McDermott, and in PS#3 Mike Eichstedt.
