Madden Blisters MACS and Carolina Clash Field Winning Ernie Shelton’s 29th Annual ‘ USA 100TM’ at VMS!

Posted by Late Model Editor  |  08/14/08

Chris “Smokey” Madden, Grey Court, SC, had a night to remember during the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series and Carolina Clash co-sanctioned Ernie Shelton’s 29th Annual Miss Utility ‘USA 100TM’ presented by United States Army at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, Jamaica, VA. Madden piloting a Bloomquist Chassis recorded fast time during the AlturnaMATS® ‘Shock the Clock’ Time Trials presented by JNJ Motorsports Media, just shy of the track record by .002 of a second, won the first of two 25-lap qualifiers, and led all 50 laps of the main event claiming $12,000 for the evening.

Madden and Jeremy Miller led the first 25-lap qualifier to the green with Miller using the outside line to take the early lead. ‘Smokey’ hounded Jeremy for the first five laps until the two leaders caught lapped traffic on the sixth circuit. Madden used one of the lapped markers as a ‘pick’ to make his way under Miller’s familiar Buckler Motorsports entry snagging the lead. Madden never looked back the rest of the way leading the remaining 19 laps to collect the $1,000 paycheck. The 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Rookie of the Year Tim Fuller led 22 of the 25 laps in the second qualifier but an outstanding performance by VMS regular, Jamie Lathroum saw him capturing and overhauling Fuller on lap 23 as he marched on to take the $1,000 top prize as well as the final front row starting spot for the final 50-lap segment.

Madden and Lathroum paced the fire breathing 26-car field to green. Madden’s dominance didn’t end after his qualifier was over. After quick caution during the opening stanza, Chris took control of the 50 lap main event. As Madden was attempting to check out World of Outlaw star Rick Eckert was making a move from his third starting position up to second. Lathroum stayed right with Eckert as Fuller as well as two-time and defending MACS champion Jason Covert battled for the fourth spot. The caution waved for the second time on lap seven when Ricky “The Rocket” Elliott’s #45 came to a sudden stop in turn four.

The ensuing restart saw MACS regular and rising star Doug Horton bolt into fifth from his ninth place starting spot. Horton continued his onslaught of the leaders as two short laps later he relegated Covert to fifth as he flew around the high side of the immaculate, three grooved speedway. Jason wasn’t deterred as he slung his BK Motorsports #43A ‘high and wide' not only recapturing the spot but also getting around Fuller for fourth as he set his sights on the third place car of Lathroum.

A lap 15 caution quickly bunched the leaders together again as Madden continued to lead Eckert. The race for third through sixth was an all out war between Lathroum, Covert, Fuller, and Horton as each tried to wrestle the other for position. This quartet raced each other three, and sometimes four wide for third. The action was spine tingling and was worth the price of admission to see these fourth drivers race each other so hard and never rub or touch.

Three more cautions slowed the pace but Madden was undaunted no matter what his competition had upper their collective sleeves. Madden ‘smoked’ all 50 laps collecting, not only his first MACS win but his first Ernie Shelton’s Miss Utility ‘ USA 100TM’ presented by U.S. Army. Eckert held on strongly for second followed by Lathroum, who won the battle for third, Fuller, and Horton rounding out the top five. The next tier of five drivers was led by Covert in sixth; David Williams; former MACS Champion, Chuck Harper; Jim Bernheisel; and Booper Bare.
