Wysox NAPA Auto Night Redline Raceway 8-15-2008

Posted by Tom Ames  |  08/18/08

Racing action continued this past Friday night at Redline Raceway. Ed May of the Wysox NAPA graciously sponsored the evenings events. Wysox NAPA also added extra bonus money to each divisional feature winners. Following the qualifying heats several drivers brought their machines up to the fan area for an autograph session. This gave the fans a chance to meet with their favorite drivers and many children were having hats, shirts, even their arms signed by the drivers. One fan even had her remote control car signed by Doug Colton as it was her very first race she ever attended. The Matthews family would like to thank all the drivers who were able to participate in the autograph session. Your effort was greatly appreciated. The feature portion of Wysox NAPA night was ready to begin as the "Mighty" Modifieds were called to the staging area. Jared Keeney from Canton, Pa., with Lake Ariel's Brian Malcom alongside took the 19 car field to the green flag. Brian Malcom following a couple of early cautions charged to the lead position with Tony Harris right behind in second. Caution slowed the field on lap 8 for a spin in turn one. Malcom electing to restart on the outside of the front row took the green once again. Malcom took the top spot heading down the back stretch Harris held second and J.T. McKernan ran in third. As the laps clicked off Malcom started to pull away from Harris and McKernan. Brian Malcom in a dominating performance went on to take his first feature win of the 2008 season. Harris with a strong run finished in second and J.T. McKernan crossed the stripe to take third. The nationally sanctioned I.M.C.A. Modifieds took to the raceway next. Granville Summit's Bernie Baker with Don Cole from Canton took the 11 car field to the start. Victor McNeal took his 31 machine to the front right away with Ed Sites powering into second on the first lap around. Caution came out as Lyle Smith lost the handle in turn 1 and collected Mark Griffin. Both were able to continue. Sites on the second circuit took over the top position and Ray McClure followed to move into second and Andy Ritter found himself running third. Following another yellow Mark Griffin made a bid for that third spot down the back straight. Griffin by lap 5 moved inside Ray McClure to take over second spot and set his sights on the leader. Ed Sites suddenly on lap 11 fell off the pace with mechanical problems and that inherited the lead to Griffin, McClure second and Smith ran in third. Mark Griffin ran to the checkers from there taking his 6th feature win of the season. Ray McClure crossed in second and Lyle Smith finished a strong third. The Pure Stocks eased their way onto the red clay next led by Towanda's Bobby Maynard with Bobby Hall Jr., from Athens to the outside of the front row. Bobby Maynard in his 29 set the pace early with Doug Colton holding second. Following a caution Rob Parker took over the top spot heading off corner 4. Maynard a few laps later retook the lead as he made a move outside of the Parker machine. Mid way through the feature Maynard, Parker and Jason Benjamin went three wide for the lead heading down the back chute. Maynard again retook the top position Bobby Butcher found himself in second and Jason Benjamin in third. The battle for the lead was a good one as Maynard and Bobby Butcher ran dead even for the lead on lap 13. Butcher slid to the inside of Maynard off turn 2 and took the top spot away. Jason Benjamin moved into second placing Maynard back to third. Caution slowed the field on lap 19 that would set up a one lap shoot out for the win. Bobby Butcher was able to hold on top take his first win of the season, Chad Ely who started 10th on the grid powered inside of Benjamin to take second and Bobby Maynard also was able to move around Benjamin to finish third. The Mini Stocks rolled out onto the raceway with Canton's Mike Navone and Troy Pa's Travis Parks showing the way to the start. Parks led the pack early on as A.J. Potrzebowski made his way to second and Ed Hulslander moved into third place. Potrzebowski quickly ran down the Parks machine to take over the point. Hulslander moved up to second on lap 7 coming off the 4th turn and set his sights on the leader. A.J. Potrzebowski led the remainder of the feature event, cruising to his 6th feature win of 2008. Ed Hulslander finished a solid second and Travis parks rounded out the top three. Last but certainly not least were the Hobby Stocks. New Albany's Brandon Hillyard with Tyler Deeghan from Canton led the field to the green flag start. Deeghan took the lead as Andrew Doorman trailed in second. Mike Ely and Kurtis Benjamin put on a show for third as they ran door to door on laps 5 and 6. Ely won the battle for the moment as Benjamin dropped back to 4th position. At the halfway point the front two machines of Deeghan and Doorman had a half of straight away advantage over Ely who was running 3rd. With just a handful of laps remaining Deeghan and Doorman ran nose to tail, Deeghan ran hard into corner 3 and lost the handle bringing out a yellow. Deeghan was able to continue along with Doorman , however both restarted at the tail end of the field. That inherited the lead to the 7 of Mike Ely with James Belcher running second and Benjamin rounding out third. Kurtis Benjamin and Mike Ely moved into second and third down the backstretch heading into turn 4. Kurtis Benjamin with a head of steam ran hard off turn 4 on the final lap and pulled even with the 7 of Mike Ely. It appeared to be a photo finish at the stripe. The Benjamin machine was ruled to be a bumper ahead of Mike Ely to take his first feature win of 2008. Mike Ely finished a hard earned second and Harry Ely rounded out the top three. This week at Redline will be P.D. Pepper and Family Night. The Pro Truck Series will be in town to perform for the second time this season. Last time out the Pro Trucks put on a great show for the Redline faithful. The 2008 racing season is quickly coming to a close and the Championships have not been settled as of yet. The remaining events will be without a doubt some of the best of the year. The Redline drivers know that every point that they can gather is valuable to the 2008 Championship Chase. Gates open at 5 warm ups at 7 with qualifying at 8 p.m. Everyone have a safe week and we will see you at the Races!!!!!!!!!!!!
