Crazy Night Leaves King of the Track Unfinished, Tryon and Shadic See Checkers

Saturday August 16, 2008

By Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY: The weather once again played a key role in the full card of events at the Valley of Speed. Saxton Signs and Waste Management lined up a special card of features, along with a extra $1,000 to win Sportsman feature presented by Canaan Auto Supplies, and the 4th and final round of the King of the Track.

Just like in weeks past, before the first race could get underway, the rains came causing another 1hour delay to the start of the events. Then as the sun went down over the westerly skies, the fog soon followed. On the front row of the Saxton Sign and Waste Management 30 lap feature event was the #24S of Rich Salisbury and the # 7 of John Ruchel.

At the drop of the green flag, Salisbury charges out to the early lead as the #55K of Mike King moved his way into 2nd place. The field rounded turn 4 only to be slowed by caution as the #14 of Lorne Browe was caught up in jingle causing Browe to spin.

While under caution the #98 of Marshall and the #42 of Sheldon went pitside for flat tires. The green flew once again with Salisbury out front and King still to follow. Lap 5 the caution flew once again for a slowing #20 of Matt Quinn with a flat tire. At the same time, a bizarre incident saw the #77J of J.C. Flach make contact with another car on the backstretch, causing damage to front suspension, as the car veered across the track into the inside wall and making contact with a track wrecker. Both were done for the night.

When the green flew once again, Salisbury was still out front when the caution flew again, this time for a track choking multi-car incident that stopped the race in the tracks under a red flag. The #87 of Hector Stratton blew a water pump entering turn 1 on the 6th lap, spewing water all over the track causing everyone to scatter behind him.

Caught up in the crash was Kenny Tremont, Wayne Jelley, Steve Hough, John Hewitt, Kyle Sheldon, Keith Flach, Lorne Browe, and Ryan Larkin. This incident caused the red flag to fly for nearly ten minutes as the track was cleared, all the while the fog began to seep into the high banks, and by the time the last car was hooked, the fog settled in, and the race was called for safety reasons.

The 4th and final leg of the King of the Track will resume next Saturday night for the remaining 2 dozen laps. The field will be lined up as they were when the field was frozen after the red flag flew.

With fog threatening most of the feature events earlier in the night, the special Canaan Auto Supplies $1,000 to win 20 lap feature was on the track with the #122 of Wayne Keys and the #83 of Chad Pierce on the front row. At the drop of the green, Keys jumped out front first to take control of the field.

But before the field could get through the first turn, the #3 of Kim Lavoy, made contact with the outside wall in turn 1, caution the #3 to go pitside for repairs. On the restart, Keys took control again, this time with the #83 of Pierce in hot pursuit of Keys, with the #00 of Kokosa finding away to get to the front as well.

As the laps began winding down, the contenders began to get itchy, looking for a way around the #122. As the field completed lap 15, Pierce and Kokosa both got a run on Keys going down the backstretch, spliting the #122 both high and low. But by the time they got to turn three, they ran out of racing room, causing contact between the three, leaving the #122 and #83 in the fence along with the #9 of Ed Harkins, the #22 of Jeff Watson, and the #250 of Alan Houghtaling.

The #63 of Danny Sanchez was handed the lead as Kokosa was relegated to the rear of the field. On the restart, Sanchez took control, then gave it away as the left rear wheel and tire came off the #63 causing the car to spin and the caution to flew again.

This time, the #5 of Chris Tryon was left holding the cards. At the green, Tryon charged away, and covered the field, as the checkers flew. Tryon crossed the line first and took home the $1,000 paycheck. Kory Sandstedt settled for 2nd, followed by Frank Harper, Neil Stratton, and Kyle Hoffman to round out the top 5.

The 20 lap Pro Stock feature was next on the list of events fighting to keep the fog at bay. On the point was Matt Shadic driving the #12S with the #17 of Nick Hilt completing the front row. The first caution flew about lap 9 as contact between the #35 of Rick Dempsey and the #78 of Paul LaRochelle cause LaRochelle’s car to go piteside with heavy damage to the right front suspension.

On the restart, Shadic still had control of the top spot, even with defending champion Kevin Arnold shadowing his every move. It didn’t matter who was challenging cause Shadic had ‘em all covered, as the checkers flew, Shadic crossed the line first followed by Arnold, a charging Robbie Speed snuck into 3rd, Jason Casey battled for 4th, and Nick Hilt held on for 5th.

Dave Striebel return to victory lane in the Limited Pro Stocks, while in the other full fendered Pure Stock division, the winners were: PS#1 - Harold Tarantino, PS#2 - Ray Hall Jr., and PS#3 - Lou Ganczar.

The Northeastern Vintage Dirt Modified Racing Club was also on tap for a little time travel back to the racing of old. After a strong battle, the #5 of Raymond See Sr. took the checkers in his circa mid-70’s Gremlin machine.

On tap for next Saturday is the remaining 24 laps of the Saxton Sign, Waste Management Modified feature which will complete the $4,000 King of the Track Mid-Summer Shootout. Then it’s back the beginning with County Concrete Presents the DeVries Lumber $800 to win Pro Stock Feature event along with the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series.
