TOMMY EIKLOR CAPTURES GEORGE LEWIS MEMORIAL AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY
AUGUST 15TH, 2008 – CENTER LISLE, NY
This past Friday night, the family of the late George Lewis celebrated his legacy by sponsoring the night’s racing activities at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle. The Hunt’s Auto Service IMCA Modifieds were brought to the green flag by Don Reeves out of Genoa, NY. Reeves lead the field until lap 2, before the Fleming Livestock Transport #10 of Chris Fleming took over the top spot. Division points leader, Tommy Eiklor, moved into 2nd place on lap, and set his sights on Fleming for the lead. The pair of stars put on an awesome display of racing for the next ten laps, until Fleming bobbled in turn 2, handing the lead, and ultimately the win, to the “Barton Rocket”. It was win #10 on the season for Eiklor in the familiar Wagner Logging, Harris Chassis #44. Fleming settled for 2nd. KC Cole posted his best run of the season coming home 3rd, with Sean Lias 4th, and IMCA rookie Jerry Lobdell Jr., wheeled his Ed Smith Construction #2L to yet another top 5 finish.
The Autoworks of Ithaca Sportsman Modified polesitter, Bret Welch, led the field in the early goings of the 25 lap event, until relinquishing the lead on lap 9 to Candor, NY’s Flyin’ Brian White, aboard his Garth Fabrication, 2007 Bicknell mount. White set sail for the promised land as the feature race the went distance from the lap 9 caution. Following White to his 2nd win on the season was the “PJ Flyer” PJ Goodwin. “Fast” Eddie White was 3rd, Welch posted a strong run in 4th, and John Morse of Blodgett Mills notched his best run of the season in 5th.
The New York Modified Midgets made their 2nd appearance of the season at the 3/8 mile speedplant. 16 cars made the haul for what would be their first night of racing of their Southern Tier Swing, as they would also compete the following night at Thunder Mountain sister track, Skyline Raceway, on Saturday night. 17 year old superstar, Zach Morgan, son of series’ director and fellow competitor Timex Morgan, raced his Lafler Chassis’ sponsored #7 in the 2nd spot until he made his winning pass, and took the lead from Nick Cooper in the late goings of the feature event to capture the popular win.
Bob Mills, driving his brother’s Hillis Automotive #15, paced the 20-car Hunt’s Auto Service Hurricane Street Stock field to the green flag. Mills, trying to repeat his winning performance from one week ago, led for the first five laps, until “Rollin’ Thunder” Rich Green, aboard the Hunt’s Auto Service, Pro Flow sponsored #35, motored by on the top side. Green proceeded to show the way, until a caution flag on lap 18 restacked the field for one final restart. Green had the field covered at the finish, with John Cooper Jr. and his #4Roses machine coming home in the bridesmaid position at the stripe, with Mills 3rd, newcomer Darl Ellis 4th, and current point leader, Mike Wilbur Sr., in 5th.
Teenager Austin Welch led the first six laps of the 15-lap Bandit affair, after starting in the 3rd position. He would give up that lead on lap 6 to point leader Nick Griest of Cincinnatus, NY. Griest would capture the win, with Welch 2nd. While “Smokin’” Dave Jenkins finished in a solid 3rd, with Matt Tripp and Ray Oakley rounding out the top 5.
After taking over the lead on lap 2, “Mr. Smooth” Jim Money put on a clinic, winning by a comfortable margin over runner-up Nate Degraw, Kyle Hackett, Rich Powell, and Randy Knight in the 4 Cylinder Super Stock feature.
Paul Lockwood, driving his #3 El Camino, had the Road Warrior field covered, as he led from start to finish. Jacob Fowlston was 2nd, DJ Pender 3rd, Jesse Velez 4th, and current point leader Rick Frisco rounded out the top 5.
Tammy Welch captured her 3rd win of the season in the PussyCat division over Ashley Jones and Cindy Frisco.
Thunder Mountain notes: 105 competitors signed into the pit area. 4 Crate Sportsman competitors from Woodhull and Fulton Speedways raced in the Sportsman ranks, as what looks to be a potential tune-up for the October Fall Ball gala at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Action may have wound down after the last feature on Friday night, however the buzz has still yet to fade, as this Wednesday night, Gypsum Wholesalers sponsors the 358-powered T3 All Star Series for their 40 lap shootout, which boasts a purse of $12,000. Also on tap will be the Hurricane Street Stocks for a 25-lap battle royale, with the winner bringing home the payday and a coveted guaranteed starting spot for September’s Hurricane Harry Uhl Jr. Street Stock Memorial.
Thunder Mountain Speedway is home of the 6th Annual Hurricane Harry Uhl Jr. Street Stock Memorial and hosts racing every Friday night from April through October. The Speedway is located off exit 8 of Interstate 81. From there follow route 79 west for five miles and turn right in Center Lisle and follow the signs.
