Gonyo On Top At Airborne
August 16
Plattsburgh, NY - Leon Gonyo swept around Mike Reyell with five laps to go and went on to win the 30-lap Taylor Rental/Lake Champlain Roofing Modified main event at Airborne Speedway. Gonyo, fourth in the Modified standings, became the eighth different winner in 2008. Reyell started on the pole and kept his upset bid alive through four restarts before Gonyo and runner-up George Foley dropped him to third at the finish.

Modified point leader Mike Bruno protected his slim lead over Patrick Dupree by passing Dupree for fourth place in the final turn. Pierre Berthiaume, Bucko Branham and Francis McNeil followed Dupree to the line.

“The car wasn’t that good on the outside, but I had to go out there to get Mike,” Gonyo said. “He drove a heck of a race.” Gonyo made three tries on the outside of Reyell and nearly lost second to Dupree before taking over the point.

“Anytime you get a top-5 here at Airborne, you’ve done an awesome job,” Reyell said. “This was a feature for us after the trouble we’ve had this year.” George Foley, Aaron Bartemy and Matt Woodruff won the Modified heats.

Tylor Terry of Morrisonville took the lead on lap 11 and held off Robin Wood and Bucko Branham to win the J&S Steel Sportsman 25-lap feature by three car-lengths. Wood and Branham finished nose-to-tail two car-lengths ahead of Richie Turner. Jamy Begor and Skip Liberty were 5th and 6th. The victory was Terry’s second of the season and third of his career.

Lonnie Rivers inherited the Renegade win after Chris Frennier and Keith O’Neil failed post-race inspection. Unofficially, Rivers’ third win moves him within three points of division leader Joe Daniels. Lance Rabtoy and Rick Hart advanced to second and third.

Speedy Bresette inherited the Monster Energy Bomber win following the disqualification of Randy Martin. Eric Reyell and Josh Terry advanced into spots 2-3.

Justin Doner earned his first win with a three-wide move on lap eight of the 15-lap NAPA Warrior feature. Rick Doner was the runner-up.
