BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY POINT CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE DECIDED THIS FRIDAY…By Gary Lileck
Forestville, PA – August 17, 2008 - Within the blink of an eye, the 2008 season is vastly approaching its completion. In just two weeks, the Alpine Building and Post Supply Coalcracker races will be contested. This Friday August 22 will serve as the final test before the prestigious Coalcracker festivities. It is the final points race for 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, and Roadrunners.
The 358 Modifieds have competed in seventeen events, producing ten different feature winners. Defending track champion Jeff Strunk of Mohnton currently leads the standings by 145 markers over former six-time point king Duane Howard of Oley. Rounding out the top five are Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Rick Laubach of Quakertown, and Meme DeSantis of Temple.
The Sportsman class has held 16 events and eight different competitors have reached victory lane. Brad Brightbill of Sinking Springs and Kyle Weiss of Hamburg have been battling all season long. With one point race remaining, Brightbill holds a 155 point advantage over Weiss. Brightbill is searching for a first ever track championship. His father Kenny Brightbill was the 1991 Small Block Modified champion. Weiss has won a pair of championships in the past, 1992 Roadrunner and 1995 Street Stock.
Perhaps the most exciting chase for the championship will take place in the Roadrunner class. The top five drivers are separated by a mere 125 points. Only one of the contenders, Tom Hablett of Schuylkill Haven, is a past champion (2007). Forestville’s Kevin Olenick (the standings leader by only five markers), Auburn’s Joe Hendricks (who is enjoying a two-in-a-row win streak, six overall), Jeremy Becker of Pottsville, and rookie Kody Sites of Hamburg are hoping that their night in the sun is this Friday.
