Jerry Higbie Sensational In OCFS 358 Modified Win; Third In Big Block Run

Posted by Tom Ames | 08/19/08

GOSHEN, NY-- Jerry Higbie Sensational In OCFS 358 Modified Win; Third In Big Block RunBy Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media Slate Hill, New York Modified star Jerry Higbie started from 10th position last Saturday night at the Orange County Fair Speedway and wasted little time in slicing his way through the stellar field of competitors to take control of the race lead and capture his second 358 Small Block Modified win at the speedway in 2008. Higbie drove the Affordable Transmission owned number 17 to the decisive win and with it bolstered the stronghold he has had on the division for the past month of racing. Higbie was followed across the line by Johnny Guarino with Tim Hindley finishing for third place money. Chuck McKee was fourth and Tommy Meier rounded out the top five running order for the event. With the win, Higbie leads the 358 Small Block rankings with 476 points. Tim Hindley is sitting in second place in the points chase with 432 markers. Johnny Guarino sits in third place with 384 points and defending track champion in the division David Van Horn rests in fourth place with 379 tallies. Craig Mitchell completes the top five point getters with 369 points. With just two races remaining in the points hunt, the final two races will be critical in determining the champion. For Higbie, the consistency he has shown throughout the 2008 season must remain with him for the final two events as he seeks to earn his third small block title at the speedway. Higbie began his run in the Big Block portion of the evening from the eighth starting position. Finding a couple of different lanes available to him early on, Higbie was quick to take advantage of the racing room and worked his way into third place during the early and mid stages of the event. Losing a position back to fourth to Jeff Hoetzler Sr, Higbie pressed on and finally was able to move by Hoetzler late in the race when the Heotzler racer soured. Mike Kolka scored the win with Donnie Wilson capturing second place money. Higbie was third with Chris Whitehead finishing in fourth and Colin Jackson rounding out the top five. The Big Block points break down with David Van Horn leading the way with 674 tallies. Chuck McKee is a close second with 637 points. On the basis of his strong performance, Jerry Higbie moved into third place with 612 points and dropping Hoetzler back to fourth with 603 markers. Rookie Michael Storms rounds out the top five with 591 points. With some drivers such as Mike Kolka and Donnie Wilson coming off big performances on Saturday night and point leaders Van Horn and McKee suffering from off nights, the points picture again will prove to be critical for the final two weeks of the season. Higbie will need to be at the top of his game and hope for some help to cut down the Van Horn margin in the final two events. With the Accord Speedway suffering from two consecutive rainouts, the Accord Modified point standings remain as they were with Andy Bachetti leading the way with 658 points. Rich Ricci Jr is currently second with 599 points and Higbie is hot on his heels with 586 tallies. John McGill is fourth with 548 points and Jackie Brown Jr completed the top five with 511 points, one digit more than sixth place driver Danny Tyler who has 510 markers. With three point shows remaining in the Accord season, again Higbie will need to close out the points chase with three strong outings and hope for some help from the supporting cast of talent that make up the Modified roster. This week will find the Higbie race team back at Accord Speedway for the Friday night racing action as Camera and Autograph night takes center stage at the raceway on August 22nd. The team will then move over to OCFS for the Saturday night racing. Higbie's aggressive 2008 racing schedule finds him in the thick of the racing action as he challenges for the Accord Speedway and Orange County Fair Speedway Championships this year. For the Accord events, Higbie will race the family owned signature numbered 97 cars and for his assault on OCFS and select WRG Series Races, Higbie will once again strap himself into the Team Shaver numbered 47 equipment as the Shaver Team will have two Big Block cars for Higbie to steer. Sponsorship for the Teams comes from a great group of loyal sponsors who have supported Higbie throughout his successful racing career. Mid-City Transit, Mr K's Carpet Service, Behrent's Speed Center, SKJ Towing and BadaBing Pizza have all lent their support to the 97 cars, and Beaverkill Trout Hatchery, Superior Building Supply and Woodburne Lawn & Garden lend their support to the Shaver Team. In addition to his Big Block rides, Higbie will be slipping behind the belts of the Affordable Transmission numbered 17 for a run at the 358 Small Block title at OCFS. Jerry Higbie Racing would like to thank the entire racing community for their support and well wishes as the team remains in the championship hunt at both speedways Higbie's business, HigFab, has been busy throughout the new racing season helping many teams with their racing programs.
