Coffey shows he has what it takes to run 600’s.
Linwood, NY – August 19, 2008
BTK Motorsports took the week to go over the car and make changes to better the car for the upcoming race at Paradise Speedway. The car was fast right out of the box in hot laps and just needed a minor tweaking to make the car perfect for the heat race.
Coffey got the luck of the draw and drew a good starting position for the heat race and was coming out of the 4th starting spot on the grid. At the drop of the green flag, Coffey charged to the 2nd spot and set his sights on the previous weeks feature winner Ray Sands Jr. Sands and Coffey checked out on the rest of the field and Coffey was trying everything to reel in the quick Sands but couldn’t get it done and had to settle for the runner up spot.
The team quickly went to work to make changes on the car for the feature. By finishing 2nd in the heat this would place Coffey 3rd in the line up for the feature. Sands would start on the pole with Paul Habbock to his right. Coffey got a good start and held his position but slid up track and lost the position to David Ferguson. Coffey was fighting a tight condition and was making adjustments as he was chasing Ferguson. Sands was checking out but Habbock and Ferguson were in striking distance as they hit lap traffic. The caution flew bunching up the field but Coffey had lap cars between him and the top three. One lap car gave Coffey a hassle and it took him nearly a lap to dispose of him and began to reel the leaders in. With 2 laps to go the caution flew again bunching the top 4 up with no lap cars in the mix. While riding around under the yellow, Coffey was wandering to the top side checking to see if there was any bite up there. On the restart Coffey blasted the top side and drove along side Habbock and Ferguson as they went 3 wide down the back stretch. Again Coffey blasted the top side going into turn three but Habbock drifted up track pushing Coffey up into the loose stuff. The door opened up and Ferguson dove under Habbock for the runner up spot. Coffey then got a good run and dove under Habbock for 3rd and drove to the checkers. Ray Sands collected his 2nd straight feature.
“Under that last yellow I was thinking to myself, I have to make something happen here if I want to move up in the running order.” stated Coffey. “I was checking out the high groove as the leaders were all running the bottom. I wasn’t sure if it was gonna work but when that green flag flew that old sprint car instinct kicked in and to the top I went.” Coffey commented.
