Posted by Tom Ames  |  08/24/08

Granville, Pa.

The racing season is winding down for the 2008 at Redline Raceway, but the racing action is certainly heating up on the track. With just two more events left the drivers are trying to gather up all the championship points they can before the season comes to a close. P.D. Pepper and Family were the primary sponsors for Friday evening's events. The Pro Trucks were also on hand to entertain the Redline faithful for the second time this season. The Nationally Sanctioned I.M.C.A. Modifieds headlined the show as it was their turn to run first on the night's schedule. Sonny Terry from Monroeton with Granville Summit's Bernie Baker starting outside took the field to the start. Baker ran to the front at the drop of the green placing Terry back to second. Josh sawyer who started 7th on the grid was moving up quickly as he took second spot from Terry, and set his sights on the leader. Meanwhile back in the pack defending champion Mark Griffin was trying to move to the front when on lap 8 the 11k suffered a broken axle and was forced pit side. Midway through the feature event Bernie Baker was still showing the way with Sawyer in second. Ed Sites made a move inside Victor McNeal off the second turn as McNeal slipped up the banking allowing Sites to move inside to take over third place. Baker, Sawyer, and Sites were all running nose to tail in a very tight battle. Sites and Sawyer made contact in corner 1 and brought out a yellow. Both would continue but in the round out positions. On the ensuing restart Baker was trying to hold on the the point with "Dangerous " Don Cole now running second and Terry holding down third. Bernie Baker was able to hang on and take his first ever I.M.C.A. Modified feature win. Don Cole crossed in second and Sonny Terry settled for third. The Pure Stocks made their way onto the raceway. 21 Pure Stocks led by Lee Vinson from Troy, Pa., and Gillette's Tammy Dixon outside took the green. Dixon led the first lap around but a yellow came out and slowed the field on lap 1. Dixon with Doug Colton now in second took the green and Colton bolted out to the front. Behind him Ben Hulslander made a move around the Vinson machine, Vinson then spun and collected a number of cars and brought out another caution. The field ran to the green again and Ben Hulslander found himself out front. Nick Robinson and Jason Benjamin were battling side by side for second for laps 3 and 4. Robinson with a great run off the 4th turn made his way by Benjamin for that second spot. Robinson ran hard down the back straight and took the lead away from Hulslander the next circuit around. The remainder of the feature was a series of yellows that Robinson was able to survive and take his second feature win of the season. Jason Benjamin came home in second with a great run. Gary Lamphere a racing name not heard of very much for several years had a good run coming home in third. Next on tap were the Pro Trucks. This is a traveling series that competes throughout New York and Pennsylvania. At the drop of the green Tim Povoski from Corning New York split the 52 of Mark Guinup and James Freeman number 8 to take the lead heading into corner 1. Povoski continued to show the way until lap 15 as the 2 of Doug Buckley ran him down and made a bid for the top spot. Buckley took over the lead on lap 16 and kept it for good. Buckley took the win with Tim Povoski crossing second and Mark Guinup taking third. Next to compete on P.D,. Pepper and Family night were the Mini Stocks. Shane Brown and Travis Parks paced the field to the start. Gregg Turner who started third moved to the point on the first lap around. Behind the leader Eric Ellsworth was moving up quickly from his 8th starting spot. Ellsworth on the second lap took the lead with Natasha Clark running second. Midway through the feature Ellsworth with Clark in second started to pull away from the rest of the pack. Ed Hulslander was moving up fast and finally caught the leaders. Clark and Hulslander were fighting hard for the second spot when Clark spun in turn 3 and collected the 6 of Hulslander. Both machines continued but in the back of the field. Eric Ellsworth on the ensuing restart had point leader A.J. Potrzebowski lurking behind in second. Potrzebowski was able to move around Ellsworth who had evident mechanical problems and stole the lead. Potrzebowski took the win with Ellsworth crossing in second and Travis Parks finishing third. The Front Wheel Drive Hobby Stocks led by New Albany's Brandon Hillyard and Tyler Deeghan from Canton took the green. Andrew Doorman shot out front with Deeghan chasing in second. Deeghan was quickly being pressured by Tony Belcher who moved around Deeghan to take the second spot away. Clayton Weaver returning back to Redline moved his number 1 machine to the point on lap 7. Clayton Weaver never looked back from that point taking the win Cody Baker a new face at Redline moved his way up through the field to take second and Harry Ely moved around James Belcher on the very last lap to take the third spot. The "Mighty" Modified feature event was the final show of the evening. Jared Keeney from Canton paced the field to the start. Russ Zimmerman in turn 3 spun and that collected many machines in the pack. All the machines continued on with the exception of Butch Cerullo who was escorted to the pits with heavy damage. After the green waved again George Kostelansky ran that top spot. George Kostelansky ran to the checkers from that point to take his first win of the year. Josh Pursell moved up from his 6th starting position ran close behind Kostelansky to take home second. Kevin Hartnett made a couple of nice moves late in the race to slide his 55 machine up to a third place finish. Redline Raceway will be in action this Friday night. Insinger Performance will be the primary sponsor for the evening. The "Mighty" Modifieds will be running for 1000 dollars going to the feature winner. Also believe it or not it is that time already, I.M.C.A. Modified Championship Night. After the dust settles all the final positions will be finalized for 2008 in the I.M.C.A. division. The following Friday evening will the THE LAST RACING EVENT FOR 2008. C & G Wilcox Engravings and Images present the Fall Season Championship for 2008.
