MUSEUM TO HOST RECEPTION ON SATURDAY TO HONOR
MIKE DEWEY FOR HIS DONATION OF SPRINT AND DIRT CHAMP CARS
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (August 22, 2008) - The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum will be hosting a reception tomorrow, August 23, at 4 p.m. to honor Mike Dewey of Santa Paula, California, for his donation of the Snyder Fiberglass sprint car and the King O’Lawn dirt championship car to the 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. The Snyder Fiberglass-sponsored sprint car was driven by the late Kenny Gritz to a win in the 1969 Knoxville Nationals championship, while the former Leonard Faas-owned dirt champ car was driven by a host of drivers, including Cheryl Glass, Emmett Hahn and Rick Goudy. The reception in the first floor Donald Lamberti National Sprint Car Museum is free and open to the public.
According to executive director Bob Baker, “We are truly appreciative of Mike Dewey’s donation of both of these Don Edmunds-built cars. With its 1969 National Championship win, it is only appropriate that the Kenny Gritz/Larry Snyder sprint car number 12 comes back to Knoxville to rest permanently. We are very proud to be hosting Larry Snyder and the family and friends of the late Kenny Gritz of Lincoln, Nebraska, this Saturday. And we are excited about exhibiting another open-wheel car that was driven by the late Cheryl Glass, the black female sprint car driver from Seattle, Washington. The United States Auto Club (USAC) dirt championship car number 25, built in 1970, was owned at various times by Leonard Surdam, Leonard Faas and Charlie Patterson. It joins the Jack Conner number 32 Glass-driven sprint car that is already in the National Sprint Car Museum, courtesy of John Nelson of Seattle.”
