RAHMER SURVIVES TO WIN AGAIN ? CHAD LAYTON TOPS URC
MECHANICSBURG, PA ? Fred Rahmer made a seemingly impossible save, then held off a furious charge by Brian Montieth to win the 25-lap sprint car feture Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
It was career victory number 78 for Rahmer at Williams Grove, and few of the first 77 were any more impressive.
Rahmer started 12th and was up to fourth on lap four as Mike Erdley set the early pace. With eight laps down Rahmer had moved into second and began to chase Erdley. He took the lead on lap eleven and appeared to be in a good position to score his fourth victory of the season at Williams Grove. But the race was a long way from over.
Brian Montieth, who started 9th, followed Rahmer past Erdley and began to turn up the heat on the leader.
With Montieth, a master of the outside cushion, behind him, Rahmer was forced to move up from his preferred line to block the challenger?s charge. Montieth tried every trick in his arsenal to get by, including several slide jobs at both ends of the track, but Rahmer always managed to drive back in front.
Rahmer?s closest call occurred late in the race when a lapped car blocked his path. His car climbed a wheel of the lapped car and pointed skyward for a long moment before Rahmer brought the car back on all four wheels without losing the lead.
Montieth made one final charge on the last lap, but got a little sideways and Greg Hodnett, who started 11th, took the runnerup spot.
Doug Esh came from 14th to finish fourth ahead of Erdley. Niki Young, Brian Leppo, Todd Shaffer, Cody Darrah and Mark Smith completed the top ten.
John Westbrook, Cory Haas and Erdley claimed heats for the 24 sprint cars in competition.
Chad Layton started sixth in the 25-lap URC feature and made an inside move through turns three and four on the 8th circuit to take the lead from Justin Collett, then rolled to his first win of the season at Williams Grove.
Collett, Dave Ely and J. J. Grasso completed the top five. Grasso, who spun early, came all the way from the rear of the field in an impressive drive.
Heats for the 36 URC sprint cars in the pit area were won by Randy West, Collett, Ed Aikin and Ely.
Curt Michael claimed the B-main.
