DAVID GRAVEL TOPS THE BEST OF URC FOR FIRST CAREER WIN SATURDAY NIGHT AT
DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL
DELMAR, DE . . . .URC Rookie sensation David Gravel of
Watertown, CT gave the veterans of URC a driving lesson on Saturday
night, winning the twenty-five lap Rislone URC sprint car a at the
Delaware International Speedway. The Saturday night show was also part
of the Taylor & Messick Delaware State Sprint Series and marked the
eighteenth URC event of 2008. Gravel became URC's twelfth different
feature winner in eighteen events. Seven race dates still remain on
the URC 2008 Rislone Sprint Series Schedule. Gravel started sixth and
took the lead from Becca Anderson on lap eleven. In the closing stages,
Anderson, driving the Bar's Leaks sponsored URC sprint car challenged
back for the lead but Gravel was up to every challenge.
A field of twenty-seven URC sprint cars competed in three qualifying
heat races with victories going to Joey Biasi, Becca Anderson and Chuck
Palmucci as Dave Ely won the Don Ott "B" Main.
The opening lap of the twenty-five lap Rislone URC Sprint feature got
off to a wild start when Mike Kostic, Robbie Stillwaggon and Scott
Pursell tangled coming down for the green flag. Kostic and Stillwaggon
both flipped but did walk away uninjured. On the restart, Becca
Anderson bolted into the lead as sixth place starter David Gravel
charged into second. Not far off the pace was Randy West driving the
Fred Kennedy owned #56m. Becca stretched out an impressive lead but by
lap eight, seventeen year old David Gravel started to reel in the
leader. With a burst of speed on lap eleven, Gravel passed Anderson
entering turn three and quickly established a commanding lead.
As the field passed for the halfway point of the race, Gravel remained
the pace setter followed by Anderson, Randy West, Joey Biasi and Chuck
Palmucci. By lap sixteen, Anderson was closing on the leader and third
place runner Randy West was moving into the chase as well. On lap
twenty, Anderson attempted a pass for the lead but Gravel fought back.
As Anderson battled Gravel, Randy West made a move to take over second
on lap twenty-one. The top three drivers continued their battle for
lead then on lap twenty-three, the caution was displayed for Brett
Schoenly who spun in turn one.
With just two laps remaining a shoot out to the finish was shaping up.
At the drop of the green flag, Gravel bolted away from the rest of the
field as Anderson made several attempts to regain the runner-up spot.
Gravel took the win with Randy West second as Becca Anderson finished
third with Joey Biasi and Ryan Bohlke following in the top five.
