August 22nd 2008 Whitney and Branscum take Moler Checkers By Mike Goins A Hot night of racing took place at Moler Raceway Park on Friday August 22nd. With 31 late models on hand and 22 modifieds the stage was set for a great night of racing action. In the Sunesis Construction Late Model Division it was a heated battle just to make the main event beginning with 3 heat races and followed by a 12 lap B-main event. Come A-main time it was Barry Doss and Shawn Negangard on the front row and when the green flag flew it was Doss taking the lead but Negangard actually took the lead on lap two before Doss retook the lead but by lap seven it was John Whitney Jr taking the top spot and setting sail. Despite numerous cautions that slowed the pace Whitney was able to lead the pack throughout the rest of the feature event. The show was being put on by 19 starting Bill Williams who by lap 10 was up to 5th spot but contact while going three wide caused damage to the 17 machine and ended his great run. At the finish it was Whitney in his Amaze-A-Stitch Embroidery, Stephan Heating & Cooling, Cory Robbins, and Barker Fab and Machine sponsored machine taking his fourth feature win of the season. Following Whitney across the line was Barry Doss, Shawn Negangard, Josh Tidwell, and Larry Pickelheimer Jr. The hard charger award went to Rick Slayback who started 20th and finished 7th. Picking up heat wins were Barry Doss, Shawn Negangard, and Bill Blair Jr. Bill Williams won the B-main event. In the Cheapbowlingballs.com modified event it was a special night as the modifieds actually qualified for the first time ever at MRP and at the end of the order it was the “Buzzard” Doug Adkins taking top honors with a 14.004 lap. Winning heat races were Brad Wieck and last weeks feature winner Brandon Green. At the start of the feature event it looked as if Brad Wieck was going to win his 3rd feature of the season as he jumped out front with Doug Adkins settling into second position with a furious battle between Ray Branscum, Bruce Gould III, and Brandon Green just behind the leaders. By lap four Branscum had taken over the third spot and by lap ten he had taken over Adkins for second but it wasn’t until the final turn of the final lap that Ray Branscum was able to get the monkey off his back and take his first feature win of the season by just a couple of feet over Wieck. Driving the JTS Industrial Heavy Haul, NKY House Movers, RBI Truck Repair sponsored machine Branscum was able to nip Wieck at the line for the win and extend his point lead over Doug Adkins. Prior to this evening Branscum had 10 finishes this season of either second or third place finishes with only the opening night finish of 8th place coming outside the top five. Finishing behind Branscum was Wieck, Adkins, Gould, and a hard charging Dave McWilliams who had to overcome restarting on the tail at lap two. In the Phantom Fireworks Pure Stock division it was Derek Davis winning his 6th feature win of the season driving his Mugavin Auto Body, Rislone, Dooley Transmission, Brewer Excavating sponsored machine. Davis led all 15 laps with Dana Moore coming home in second and Tim Carpenter, Kevin Hess, and Chad Minnie rounding out the top five. Tim Carpenter and Derek Davis each won heat races. Ed Reynolds took home the Hard Charger award in the feature event. In the Baker’s Bright Chevette division it was Goshen’s Branden Elam taking home his third feature event of the season and second in a row and he simply ran away with the feature race in his Eastside Industrial truck Services sponsored machine.. Coming home second was Miles Tarvin (who blew a motor at the checkered flag) followed by Mike Yust, Jeff Watson, and Taylor Grooms. Heat wins went to Elam and Tarvin with Steve Leonard taking home the hard-charger award in the feature event.
