FOLEY WINS AIRBORNE MODIFIED BRUISER

Begor Gets First Sportsman Victory

South Plattsburgh - Saranac Lake drivers George Foley and Patrick Dupree turned the season’s ugliest Modified event into a personal thing of beauty on Aird Dorrance Night at Airborne Speedway Saturday. Foley stayed well ahead of caution-filled chaos (nine yellows) to earn his second 2008 win. Dupree came from the rear after early trouble to finish at Foley’s bumper for second, good enough to take over the top spot in the track championship chase by a single point over Mike Bruno.

Bruno finished third after Dupree passed him with a daring inside move as he was sizing up Andy Heywood in a battle for third at the halfway mark. Greg Atkins had a season’s best fourth-place finish. Canadians Martin Roy and Richard Tisseur finished fifth and sixth.

Foley started eighth and took the lead from Heywood for keeps on lap five. He built several lengthy leads, but restarts kept returning him to the field. Dupree and Bruno will settle the track title this Saturday, August 30 in the Charlie Trombley Memorial Labor Day Classic 100. Martin Roy remains alive mathematically as a longshot title contender.

Jamy Begor of Mooers won the J&S Steel Sportsman 30-lap feature by three car-lengths over Robin Wood. Sportsman point leader Bucko Branham was a close third. Shawn Duquette and Jason Bonnett completed the top five. After the race’s third and final restart on lap 25, Richie Turner, who had dogged Begor throughout, fell off the pace with tire trouble. Wood got to Begor’s quarter panel, but couldn’t make a winning move past him. Branham, Wood and Duquette won the Sportsman heats.

Renegade Nick Heywood of Peru won the 25-lap Aird Dorrance trophy dash. Lonnie Rivers of Morrisonville advanced into second place officially following the disqualification of Joe Daniels and assumed the Renegade point lead. Randy Ladue rose from 14th to finish third. Josh Allen and Rick Hart were next in line.

Bill Thwaits of Clintonville won his third Keeseville NAPA Auto Parts feature. Justin Doner was the runner-up. The Monster Energy Drink Bomber checkers went to Randy Martin.
