August 23rd, 2008
By: James Carver
After last weeks cancellation due to wet weather, the drivers and fans were ready for the action to return at Laurens County Speedway. A huge car count was on hand for each division. Double-points were in full effect as drivers were fighting to gain positions with the end of the season coming up very soon. In the Coca-Cola Super Late Model division Mike Measamer once again set the fastest time in qualifying for the second straight week to take pole. Frank Coates sat on the outside of row 1 looking to gain ground in the point standings. Larry Timms and Mike Ashley made up row 2 with points leader Colby Cannon starting 5th. Mike Measamer started the race off by taking the early lead down the front stretch with Frank Coates and Larry Timms right behind. Frank Coates would slide under Measamer in turn 1 to make it a side-by-side run down the back stretch. Measamer would fight back on the outside but lost the lead coming down the front stretch. Frank Coates would pull out a little distance as Larry Timms hounded Mike Measamer for 2nd. Timms would get under Measamer in the turns but never could complete the pass down the stretches. The top 5 settled out for the remainder of the race with Larry Timms and Mike Measamer continuing to put on a great race for the fans. Frank Coates (Hodges) would encounter no problems as he captured his 8th Coca-Cola Super Late Model win of the season. Mike Measamer (Clinton) held on to finish 2nd, Larry Timms (Hodges) 3rd, Mike Ashley (Greenwood) 4th, and Colby Cannon (Greenwood) rounded out the top 5.

The Limited Late Models set off with heat winners Jimmy Feltman and Mac Owens on the front row. Brett Hamm and William Morgan started from row 2. Row 3 consisted of Michael Smith and Brian Hellams. Jimmy Feltman made a great start out of turns 3 and 4 with trouble occurring behind him. The back of Mac Owens car spun around out of 4 causing Brett Hamm to have nowhere to go except for right into the side of Owens’ car. Both drivers would continue. Jimmy Feltman mad another great start as he grabbed the lead with William Morgan falling behind in 2nd. Morgan would hit trouble in turn 2 spinning out in front of the field collecting Hamm along with others. Jimmy Feltman once again made a flawless start on the 3rd attempt to take the lead with Brett Hamm moving into 2nd in turns 1 and 2 only for William Morgan to take back the spot down the back stretch on the outside. The top 3 spaced themselves from the rest of the field with Jimmy Feltman showing the way. Nolan Nabors and Mac Owens battled for the 4th spot until Owens pulled into the pits with problems affecting his car. Morgan applied a little bit of pressure on Feltman for the lead but couldn’t find a way around as Feltman drove a flawless race. The fans witnessed Jimmy Feltman (Westminster) capture his 1st Limited Late Model Feature win of the season with William Morgan (Fountain Inn) finishing a close 2nd. The Hobbies were in for a treat as the feature line up was determined by qualifying for this occasion. Dusty Eaves set fast time with a 16.682. Mart Patterson was just a tick slower starting 2nd with a 16.701. Clark Smith and Bo Baker set 3rd and 4th fastest. After 3 failed starts the feature was started in single file with Dusty Eaves setting off with a little gap between him and Patterson. The field stretched out a bit with Mart Patterson running the top line with Clark Smith and Bo Baker not far behind in 3rd and 4th. Lap traffic became an issue as it allowed Dusty Eaves to be briefly caught by the field. Mart Patterson would get a little out of shape in turns 1 and 2 allowing Clark Smith to get underneath and the two ran side-by-side down the back stretch. In turns 3 and 4 the 2 drivers got really close with contact being made causing Mart Patterson to loose a few positions. Up-front Dusty Eaves (Clinton) continued on his way to capture his 3rd Hobbie feature win of the season. Clark Smith (Laurens) finished 2nd, Bo Baker (Clinton) 3rd, Michael Lyons (Gray Court) 4th, and Mart Patterson (Clinton) rounded out the top 5.

The start of the race saw Cindy Baker and Mike Harris battle for the lead only for a small fire to erupt under the hood of Mike Harris’ machine in turns 1 and 2 ending his night. This moved Michael Simmons up to the front row on the restart. Cindy Baker started the main with Michael Simmons right behind her going down the front stretch. Chris Vickery and Brian Nelson battler for the 3rd spot while the top 2 continued their battle. Simmons was eventually able to get by Cindy only for Cindy to fight right back and retake the spot. The two would make contact and Cindy spinning out. Both were sent to the rear with Michael Simmons eventually pulling into the pits later on with problems. Cindy charged up through the field to 4th while Brian Nelson pressured Chris Vickery for the lead. Chris Vickery would hold off the challenge to collect his 2nd feature win of the season. Justin Wrenn started the main by jumping out to an early lead with Kevin Baker in 2nd. Isaac Lothridge and B.J. Cochcroft battled for 3rd while the top 2 began to pull away. It was not to be Justin Wrenn’s night as the young driver had to take his car to the pits ending his night. Kevin Baker inherited the lead while Justin McJunkin and Bill Baker, both whom started deep in the pack, were making their ways toward the front. Bill Baker found the outside groove as he used it to pass both Ralph Wrenn and Isaac Lothridge to move up to 3rd behind Justin Mcjunkin. Then with just 2 laps to go the B4 machine of Kevin Baker encountered problems as it drastically slowed coming out of turn 4. Justin Mcjunkin took the white flag with Bill Baker right behind. Going into turns 3 and 4 Bill Baker (Fountain Inn) took to the outside to pass Justin Mcjunkin down the front stretch to take his 1st ever Dwarf feature win at Laurens County Speedway.
