Talking Loud and Drawing a Crowd
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications
Just hanging around his race hauler, Todd Stewart is kind of a quiet, unassuming guy. He prefers to let others have his moment in the spotlight and wouldn’t talk about his own achievements if there was a loaded gun placed to his head. That’s just how he is. Too bad; because Todd Stewart the racecar driver has shown some his best moves over the past month of action at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
Ever since parking his #72 Red Line Oil/Stewart Speed Supplies/ ReMax Realty Concepts-Penny Blake/ Southeastern Communications/B & G Trailer Sales/Latimer’s Equipment/RW Electric/Anchor Concrete Products/Interprovincial Insulation/Fort Glass/Kwik Kopy/Dig n’ Dirt/Northwood 2 Construction/OSSO Electric Supplies TEO Pro Car in Brockville’s victory lane Saturday, July 5th Stewart has been at the top of his game.
Saturday, August 23rd was the latest example. Despite suffering engine problems that forced him to the sidelines at a different track just 2 nights earlier, Stewart brought his DIRTcar 358 modified racer home in a fine 2nd place finish – right behind his good friend Danny O’Brien. Stewart staged an epic, highlight-reel battle with Kyle Dingwall and Jason Riddell during the middle stages of the 30 lap main event. The trio swapped positions back and forth for as many as 6 laps in a row. The #72 car never strayed from the bottom groove of Brockville’s 3/8th mile layout, while first Dingwall and then, Riddell tackled the top. Todd Stewart had turned in another solid run, earning his 4th top 5 finish in as many starts at the track known as The Beast of the East.
Stewart is at a loss when it comes to explaining his late season hot streak. “I don’t think we’re doing anything different,” he offered. “It could be we’re just getting lucky at the right time. The crew is working hard and it’s paying dividends on the racetrack. I thought we wouldn’t even make it to Brockville after dropping a valve during time trials at the ‘series’ race (at Mohawk International Raceway) but we loaded the car and swapped engines as soon as we got home. It feels great to be running well, but I don’t want to get too high because the streak could end just as quickly,” he continued.
Todd Stewart will be at Brockville Saturday, August 30th, hoping to improve his position in the standings at the year’s final points paying event. The team is still thinking about heading for Cornwall’s Jiffy 150 and the Saturday, September 6th event at Brockville. Todd and his brother Glenn say a lot will depend on how well things hold together – but judging by their current hot streak, seeing the team at both shows wouldn’t be a big surprise.
