DUPREE GOES FOR AIRBORNE TITLE SATURDAY
ForImmediate Release AS-082508-1
Plattsburgh– Patrick Dupree of Saranac Lake leads DIRTcar Modified rival Mike Bruno ofCastleton, VT, by a single point heading into the decisive Charlie TrombleyMemorial 100 championship event at Airborne Speedway Saturday.
If both drivers manage to finish in the top ten, whoeverbeats the other to the finish line will be the 2008 Ernie’s Tools Modifiedchampion. Dupree has a win and 11 top-five finishes in 14 starts. Bruno, the2006 track champion, has four wins and 11 top-fives.
Dupree was a close second to George Foley of Saranac Lakelast Saturday, which enabled him to assume the top spot.
“I’m trying not to think about winning the championship toomuch, ahead of time,” Dupree said. “It is exciting though to be in the positionto possibly win it. Last week, the car was going really well, when thathappens, you’re reaction time is better and you can just take the race as itcomes.”
“Earlier in the year I was saying it was wins that I wasafter, but at this stage, we don’t have that many wins, so give us the points,”Dupree said with a grin. “Jason Sawyer does all the work in the shop – all theheavy lifting,” Dupree acknowledged. “Wes (Moody) and I fine tune it at thetrack. We’ve been consistent this year, but we’ve struggled with the new tirerule and the gear rule. We ran asphalt slicks last year. This year everyone ison DIRT tires. They’re more forgiving, so guys can go out there and throw theircar sideways and still stay on the racetrack. When they’re sideways taking uptwo lanes, they’re hard to pass. The gear rule hurts because we can’t get thesame drive off the corners we’re used to.”
“I try to race everybody clean,” Dupree attests. “Who wouldwant to win the championship by chopping somebody or knocking them out of theway anyway it would take something away from what you’ve accomplished.”
Canadian Martin Roy is still mathematically in the Modifiedtitle chase should Bruno and Dupree have unusually poor nights.
The longest race of the year for the Modifieds is named inhonor of Hall-of Fame racer Charlie Trombley, who won three Airborne titles(’59, ’60, ’66). The Plattsburgh Quarries/Moore’s Flatworks race card alsoincludes the Sportsmen, Renegades, Warriors and Bombers. More than 110 cars inall are expected to compete.
