MIKE ERDLEY AND FRED RAHMER SPLIT TWIN 20s
MECHANICSBURG, PA ? Mike Erdley and Fred Rahmer scored victories in the Billy Kimmel Memorial Twin 20s for sprint cars Sunday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Erdley started fifth in the first feature and was up to third place on the second lap.
Mark Coldren took the early lead from the pole position and set the pace until the fifth lap when Cory Haas took over.
Erdley followed Haas past Coldren and began to chase Haas.
Erdley used an inside move through turns three and four to take the lead from Haas on lap seven.
Once in front Erdley cruised to his third career victory and first of the season by a margin of 1.723 seconds.
He became the speedway?s 17th different winner in sprint car competition this season.
Niki Young, who started sixth, finished second in his best effort of the season.
Craig Keel settled for third after starting seventh. Todd Shaffer came from 12th to finish fourth and Fred Rahmer came from 18th to complete the top five.
John Westbrook, Doug Esh, Brian Leppo, Pat Cannon and Alan Krimes finished in positions six through ten respectively.
Cannon set the early pace in the second feature after taking the lead from Krimes at the start.
Esh had come from fourth to second by lap four and began to close on the leader. Esh took over with an outside move off turn two on lap 13.
Meanwhile Rahmer, who started sixth, moved into second place on the 14th circuit. A caution flag one lap later set up a showdown between Rahmer and Esh, which produced three of the most exciting laps of the season at Williams Grove.
With Rahmer and Esh sliding each other at every corner and the lead changing hands several times on each lap, Rahmer assumed control on the 18th tour and rolled to his 79th career victory at Williams Grove and fifth of the season. Esh settled for second with Leppo third and Krimes fourth. Greg Hodnett came from 16th to finish fifth ahead of Cannon, Shaffer, Erdley, Cody Darrah and Keel.
This event, named to honor the memory of a local driver who was fatally injured at Williams Grove a year ago, was rained out Friday and rescheduled for Sunday night.
The program was sponsored by The Law Offices of Colgan Marzzacco.
Heats for the 31 sprint cars in competition were won by Mark Coldren, Cory Haas and Westbrook.
The consolation race was claimed by Cody Darrah.
