Carl Billet Wins 8th Annual York County Nationals at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (August 30, 2008) – The 8th Annual York County Nationals at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday on August 30 found Carl Billet of Carlisle winning the 32-lap Late Model feature. Wes Alleman of Newville won the 25-lap Street Stock main feature event. Lancaster ’s Donnie Broderick also won the Xtreme Stock Car feature. Wellsville’s John Stoll Jr. picked up the 25-lap Four Cylinder Stock Car feature event win. Daryl Sipe of York Haven won the Speedway Auto Sales Mini Van feature event.
The 32-lap Late Model feature event began with Denny Willey holding command of the lead for the first 17 laps. As Willey was setting the pace, a few cars were steadily making their way to the front. This group included Carl Billet (10th starting spot), Scott Richwine (12th starting spot) and Bud Witmer (14th starting spot). Billet was the first to challenge Willey as he took the lead on the 18th lap. Shortly thereafter, Willey unfortunately retired to the pits with mechanical failure. A late race caution provided a two lap shoot-out for the win. Bud Witmer was unable to make the winning pass as Billet collect the $1200 top prize at the end. In a photo finish for third place, Richwine edged out Randy Christine Jr. by less than two feet. Jake Jones finished fifth but failed to heed the tech official’s request and was relegated to the tail of the lead lap, thus moving Justin Ehrhart into the fifth place position. An appeal is pending for positions five through 13 with a decision to be issued by Tuesday, September 2. Qualifying heat races were won by Christine Jr., Carl Graves and Kyle Saylor. Ronnie Thomas won the consolation event.
The 25-lap Street Stocks feature event saw Calvin Herman leading the first six circuits. Jenn Scott briefly led on lap 7 with Wes Alleman coming from a tenth place staring spot and taking the lead on lap 8 from Scott. Alleman set the pace and never looked back to win his fifth of the season. Point leader Eric Walker finished second. Scott finished a season best and very respectable third place. Steven Dove and Craig Morgan rounded out the top five. Alleman and Paul Morgan won their respective qualifying heat races.
The 25-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature saw eight lead changes over the course of the event. Classified as “one of the most exciting” features of the season, there was racing all over the track from top to bottom, front to back. Matt Adams was the early leader with Chris Heller, Donnie Broderick and Alex Updegraff all sharing the top spot more than once. When the checkered flag fell, it was Donnie Broderick narrowly winning over Alex Updergraff and Sam Rial. Matt Adams finished fourth, followed by Adam Smith. Ray Broderick, Jason Failor and Heller won the XSC qualifying heat races. Tim O’Sheehan claimed the consolation win.
The 25-lap Four Cylinder Stock Cars feature event found Jason Geesaman taking early command by jumping out to the top spot on the start. Geesaman set the pace for the first 11 laps until Dennis Christ Jr. took the top spot away on the lap 12. John Stoll Jr. moved into the lead on lap 16 with Ronnie Buck close behind. Buck briefly took the top sot on the next lap, with Stoll reclaiming the lead on very next lap. Stoll went on to take the win with Buck finishing directly behind him in second. Jason Smith. Christ and Eric Hollenbach rounded out the top five. Stoll and Buck won the Four Cylinder Stock Car qualifying heat races.
In the non-stop Speedway Auto Sales Mini Vans feature, Scott Hughes led the first eight laps until Daryl Sipe made the winning pass down the backstretch to take the lead on the ninth circuit. Sipe went on to record his third victory of the season. Hughes finished second, followed by Kenny Latz, Chad Gracey and Bill Wise.
