Airborne Speedway Recap August 30
Dupree Earns Airborne Title With Dominant Win
Plattsburgh - Patrick Dupree of Saranac Lake won the Ernie’s Tools Modified championship in impressive fashion at Airborne Speedway Saturday with a dominant victory in the Charlie Trombley Memorial 100. Dupree started 12th alongside his closest rival Mike Bruno, who trailed him by a single point at the drop of the green. He drove the Outback Steakhouse No. 24 into fourth by lap 10, dodged a potential disaster when a disabled car swerved in front of him on lap 16 and passed Andy Heywood for the lead three laps later. Bruno sat eighth at the time and rose as high as fourth before a series of tire problems ended his title bid. Dupree also narrowly missed danger when a car spun just in front of him on lap 39.
“The car was flawless,” Dupree marveled. “It never changed. It feels really awesome to have won he championship this way.” The race was a well-driven affair with only three cautions. The second yellow was for Bruno on lap 58 soon after eventual runner-up Mark Lamberton took over second place. Martin Roy followed Lamberton into third place, but was unable to gain ground on the leaders. Leon Gonyo and Heywood finished fourth and fifth. Positions 6-10 went to Aaron Bartemy, Chris Cayea, Matt Woodruff, Richard Tisseur and Craig Reyell. Bruno wound up 19th.
Francis McNeil and Adam Bartemy has strong showings negated by a last lap collision in lapped traffic. Craig Reyell, Matt Woodruff and Martin Roy won the qualifying heats. Roy finished the regular season third in points behind Bruno.
