For Immediate Release:
Carry On Cody Committee Benefits from the Donation of Some ‘Fast’ Cash
By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications
This season’s multiple rainouts may have dampened their spirits, but Kawartha Speedway drivers and staff showed they still have warm hearts as they passed the helmet to help one of their own. Friday, July 25th the track driver’s meeting wrapped-up with a collection being taken and $2,100.00 was raised to benefit 20 year-old Cody Caldwell of Peterborough.
Caldwell, who along with his brother Kevin worked as a pit steward at Kawartha was involved in a tragic diving accident Friday, June 27th in Red Deer, Alberta. Cody suffered a life-altering spinal injury and is now a paraplegic. He will remain at Foothills Hospital in Calgary until a bed becomes available in Ontario. His parents, Dave and Liz – along with his brother – have remained by his side, talking to him and sharing the many positive and supportive cards and e-mail messages being received from family, friends and loved ones. Cody is on the road to recovery, but has a long journey ahead of him.
The ‘Carry on Cody’ Committee has set-up a trust fund in his name and donations can be made at any TD-Canada Trust branch in Canada (account 3431-6020199). Cheques should be made payable to ‘Cody Caldwell, in Trust’.
To help Cody and his family through this difficult time, the committee will also hold a special benefit dance – Friday, October 3rd – at Kawartha Downs. The event will feature a silent and live auction. Some of the items already received include several autographed NHL jerseys, a leather Corvette racing jacket, signed by Ron Fellows, a 50 inch flat screen TV and a game-worn jersey, autographed by Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes. The committee is seeking donations for the auction ‘wish list’. Interested parties can contact Cheryl Wildman at 705.743.5403 or e-mail rcwildman@cogeco.ca. Auction items can be dropped-off at Douglas Automotive, 1051 Monaghan Road in Peterborough. More information is also available from Rob McCrae. 705.750.5130 or e-mail robmccrae@hotmail.com. Entertainment at the dance will be provided by The Stickmen – a local band playing a middle of the road rock n’ roll blend.
The committee urges anyone interested to visit www.codycaldwell.com to learn more about Cody and the events being planned in support of his family.
Challenges in life are ever present. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.
