Sharon Springs, NY- Bobby Varin Wins Fonda Modified Title For The Fourth Time

by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media Bobby Varin endured many changes throughout the 2008 racing season, but despite the many roadblocks he encountered along the way, Varin remained focused and determined through all of the adversity and came way with winning his fourth Modified title at the famous Fonda Fairgrounds. Varin was a rocket out of the blocks early on in the season and quickly secured two wins and took control of the point lead early on at Fonda. After Fonda Promoter Ric Lucia and Varin's car owner at the time Jake Spraker came to a disagreement as to how the track points are awarded, Spraker bid a fond farewell to the speedway and left Varin temporarily out of a ride. Varin was in need of an angel and he quickly found one in the form of his Utica Rome car owner Dave Cruickshank from Dover Brake and Buzzie Reutiman fame. The legendary car owner allowed Varin to utilize the signature numbered 00 equipment at Fonda and then went one step further and told Varin if they were going to do it, they needed to do it right and quickly purchased the Big Block car Varin had been running for Spraker at Fonda. Having the correct pieces in place, Varin continued to lead the points over a top cast of talented drivers that included defending track champion Matt DeLorenzo, Ronnie Johnson, Pat Ward, Dave Camara and the all-time feature winner and multi-time champion at Fonda Jack Johnson. While Varin was held winless throughout the remainder of the season, his consistency and his mastery over the Fonda Speedway came into play and Varin went on to earn his fourth track title. Varin's other Fonda Titles came in 2000, 2005 and 2006. He finished second in the point's chase last year to DeLorenzo. Since the turn of the new century Varin has been the dominant driver at the speedway in winning all four of his track titles in that time span. Jeff Trombley, in 2001 and 2002, Dave Lape, in 2003 and 2004, have each landed two titles each in the new millenium and Matt DeLorenzo captured his one title last year. The final Fonda points tallies show Bobby Varin winning the title with 708 points. Ronnie Johnson climbed to second in the final points with 682 points. Matt DeLorenzo was third with 664 points and Dave Camara was fourth with 650 tallies. Pat Ward had some late season malfunctions that had him drop to fifth in the final rundown with 647 points. With the Utica Rome Speedway season still having one points show remaining to be run on September 7th, all eyes will be focused on the final points night on Sunday evening. While Pat Ward is a shoe-in for the title, some changes could occur from second through fifth should a driver have an off night. Over the past weekend Bobby Varin moved into fourth place in the points chase with his second consecutive runnerup finish. Pat Ward won the event, his eighth in a year of racing that also has him currently leading the latest ROC Dirt points as well. Bobby Varin was second with Ted lamb finishing in third place and Paul Kinney working his way to fourth at the end of the race. Danny Varin enjoyed his best run of the season by finishing in fifth place. The current points picture currently has Pat Ward in front with 890 points. Willy Decker is second with 790 markers. Stewart Friesen is third with 756 points and Varin is a tick behind in fourth with 755. Mitch Gibbs completes the top five with 742 points. The latest news from the Bobby Varin camp is he has once again paired up with car owner Jody Gable for a full-fledged assault on the Moody Mile at Syracuse in October. Gable, who has vast business holdings in New York State, is best recognized for his efforts with partnering with Brett Hearn in winning tracks titles at the Lebanon Valley Speedway. For Varin the pairing is the second for the Gable/Varin efforts. Two years ago at Syracuse, the team timed seventh fastest and were expected to challenge for the race win but a myriad of problems left the team a bit disappointed when the weekend was completed. With the knowledge they gained in working together the first time, the team is focused and putting all of the pieces in place to make a concentrated run for the roses in October. The team will utilize the same race car from two years ago as the car has but a couple of races on it. This coming week the Varin family will return to the Utica Rome Speedway for the Sunday night racing action and Bobby and Danny will be again steering the Dave Cruickshank owned Dover Brake racers numbered 00 for Bobby and number 18 for Danny. Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support with their racing efforts and hope for continued support during the 2008 racing season. More updates will follow for the Varin Racing team efforts.
