Super Nationals car count reaches record 825

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 4) – If parking in the pit area seems a little more snug than at previous IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals, there’s a good reason why.

The car count for the 26th annual automotive racing extravaganza reached a record 825 Thursday afternoon, as 139 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod drivers signed in for their first night of competition at Boone Speedway.

The previous mark was 789, established two years ago.

“Car count numbers are a clear example of how successful this event has become and how much drivers, sponsors and fans want to be part of it, despite admittedly tough economic times,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said.

“Super Nationals has very humble beginnings, from 44 cars in one division in 1983 to well over 800 cars in six divisions this year,” he added. “That growth is proof that racing can be economical and successful when combined with a fair set of rules at the local track level.”

Three hundred and five Modifieds took to the track for their first qualifying races on Wednesday; other division car counts from earlier in the week included 176 Stock Cars, 139 Hobby Stocks, 47 Late Models and 19 Sprint Cars.

Northern SportMods were added to the Super Nationals program in 2005 and drew 54 entries. There were 72 in 2006 and 104 last year.
