FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HANNA WINS FIVE MILE POINT AS SHOW IS NOW RESET FOR SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH

BY JR KENNERUP ( FOR 5MP SPEEDWAY )

Kirkwood, NY … The forecasted all day heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hanna never did materialize on Saturday. But the on and off showers with bursts of heavy rain were enough to force Five Mile Point Speedway to award the nights overall checker flag to Hanna.

After the decision at 1:30 Saturday afternoon to cancel the evenings racing program which would have featured a 50 lap Modified STAR Series event along with the final point races for Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Lightning Cats, and Figure 8’s. The rain date of this show of Sunday afternoon September 14th was announced.

Racing will start this Sunday at 5 p. m. sharp with pit gates opening at 1:45 Sunday afternoon and grandstand gates opening at 2:30. Everyone who enters the grandstand on Sunday, while supplies last will receive a coupon good for $1 off their next purchase at the Upper Court Street Subway in Binghamton. Also on Sunday it will be Emergency Personnel Night at the races as all E. M. T.‘s, Police, and Fire will receive free admission with proper id being shown.

The 50 lap Southern Tier Auto Racing ( STAR ) Series event for the Modifieds will see the sail panels being used by the Modified racing teams. Many outsiders like Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, and Mitch Gibbs were all slated to be in attendance on Saturday night for the $2,000 to win feature. If all races this upcoming weekend are completed as scheduled expect these three drivers along with other traveling racers to be at the Point this Sunday afternoon.

The final point races for the Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Lightning Cats, and Figure 8’s will be held this Sunday afternoon. With championship points on the line all four titles are up for grabs and it’s a safe bet that the racing action will be hotter than it has been all season long.

Sidney Center, NY driver Shaun Walker has a 28 point lead heading into Sunday over Brian Puckett in the Sportsman division. Joey Colsten, Nick Rochinski, and Justin Holland round out the top five in Sportsman points.

In the Lightning Cat division Gary Kinnie holds a slim 12 point lead over Andy Brigham for the championship. Cody Decker, Tim Price, and Jeff Hayes are in positions three through five in the Lightning Cat point standings.

In the Figure 8 divisions Mark Andrus is undefeated this year as he has won all seven races contested to this point. Dave Cronk, Mark Cardew, Rob Warner, and Joe Warner complete the remainder of the top five in the Figure 8’s.

The Pure Stock division that has been highly competitive all season sees Shane Wolf leading multi time track champion Charlie Gilbert by 6 points going into Sunday. Jon Carpenter, Joe Rafferty, Jr. and Mike Coddington round out the top five in Pure Stock points.

Some added interest on Sunday in the Figure 8 division. Track owner and promoter Andrew Harpell issued a challenge following the last Figure 8 race which saw Mark Andrus win his seventh in a row. For this final race any track legal Pure Stock could bolt on D. O. T. tires and compete in this final event. If any of the Pure Stock drivers win the feature they would receive an additional $250 bonus. Meanwhile if Andrus wins and finishes the season undefeated he would receive $500. As of press time Butch Green and Ryan Stone have officially announced they would be racing in the Figure 8’s on Sunday.

Also slated to take place on Sunday afternoon is the Lightning Cat Non – Winners feature that was curfewed from August 30th.
