This past weekend, the Brockville Ontario Speedway took a break from their regular weekly program, and had a special Sunday afternoon matinee event, the Kane’s Towing Monster enduro race.
First up was a 50 lap event for the 4-6 cylinder enduro cars. Cory Winters took the checkered flag. Winters, from Finch, Ontario entered the 8 cylinder event with the same car, led until lap 75, when a flat tire sent him pit side.
The main event was a 100 lap race for the 8 cylinder cars. Scott Steele of Renfrew, Ontario was the winner. Brock Cullen was second, and veteran racer Jimmy Peters was third.
Brockville’s small block modified champion Danny Obrien made his way to the Canandaigua Speedway, near Rochester, NY on Friday night, and finished a strong fifth place. Finishing ahead of Danny were veteran racers Jimmy Phelps, Tim Fuller, Dale Planck, and Gary Tomkins.
Brockville Sportsman track champion Chris Raabe headed west, and finished fourth on Friday night at the Humberstone Speedway, near Fort Erie, Ontario. From there, the headed across the border to the Canandaigua Speedway and finished sixth. Raabe now leads the Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman series championship by 27 points.
Raabe, also made it to the Cornwall Motor Speedway for a special Sunday afternoon event, and won for the 21st time this season. Raabe crossed the line ahead of Steve Bernier, Dan Jalbert, Robert Gagner and Kevin Beaucage. This was Raabe’s first trip to the fast ¼ mile track.
At the Can-Am Speedway, the sportsman cars competed in their rescheduled SUNY Canton series event, and Sammy Reakes was the winner, followed by Mark Webb, Chris Hile, Brandon Sweet and Brandon Hagan.
In the street stock class, Trenton, Ontario’s Ron Wadforth won the 25 lap event in a borrowed ride. Wadforth held off a late race challenge from Mike Schultz to take the win. Dave Mannise was third, Dave Pope was fourth and Josh Scanlon was fifth.
Can-Am will open its doors again on Wednesday night October 8th, as the Mr. DIRTcar series for the Small block modifieds and the sportsman will be on the card, as well as the IMCA modifieds. This event unofficially kicks of SUPER DIRT WEEK, with racing Wednesday night at Can-Am, Thursday night at the Brewerton Speedway, Friday night at the Rolling Wheels Speedway in Elbridge, NY, and then Saturday and Sunday at the New York State Fairgrounds.
For the next three weeks, the Brockville Ontario Speedway will be closed, but that won’t stop several of the local racers from traveling to other tracks over the next couple weeks. Lansdowne racers Frank Mitchell and Steve Barber are racing at the Brighton Speedway on Saturday evening in the 4cylinder class. Mark Grier is planning to attend with his street stock. Many other modified, sportsman, street stock, and rookie cars will be making the trip west to Brighton for this weekends Applefest Shootout.
The following week, again, with Brockville being closed, many of the DIRTcar sportsman and modified teams will head to the Fulton Speedway in Central NY for the annual Schneider Brothers 200 weekend. Friday night, October 3rd will consist of a full show featuring the DIRTcar sportsman, Pro Stocks, and pure stocks, then on Saturday October 4th will be the Schneider Brothers 200, which was formerly known as the Victoria 200.
The Brockville Ontario Speedway will reopen for its fall classic on October 18th, as the Empire Super Sprints, Patriot Sprints, and the Southern Ontario Sprints will meet for the 2008 Sprint Car Spectacular. Sportsman, and street stocks will also be on the card for this event.
