Tremont Catches Bruno, WinsAirborne 100
South Plattsburgh - KennyTremont stalked Mike Bruno for 98 laps, shot underneath him exiting turn fourto take the white flag and won the Bills Body Shop/Cold Springs GraniteModified 100 by a car length Sunday at Airborne Speedway.
Tremont pulled outside and drew even with Bruno enteringturn three, when Bruno moved a little higher to fight back, he dove to the lowside and took the lead. It was the second year in a row the future Hall-ofFamer from West Sand Lake, NY, won Airborne’s Fall Foliage season finale.
“I thought I could make it stick out there, but then wecrisscrossed and I got him on the bottom,” Tremont said. “Mike drove a goodrace.” Both Tremont and Bruno said their engines were acting up in the finallaps and were lucky they lasted as well as they did.
Keith Flach stayed close to the leaders throughout andfinished third. Aaron Bartemy was fourth. Jason Durgan, who started 15th,finished fifth. Positions 6-10 went to Martin Roy, Adam Bartemy, Chris Cayea,Todd Stone and Andy Heywood.
Airborne Ernie’s Tools Modified champion Patrick Dupreeleft the field before the green was out due to rear end problems and did notreturn. George Foley, the 2007 Airborne champion, retired after an accident onlap 23 while running fourth.
Shawn Duquette of Morrisonville won the Sportsman 100after struggling earlier in the event. Jason Bonnett got within two car-lengthsof Duquette, but never any closer. “The car finally came together after about75 laps,” Duquette. Toby Ebersole took over the lead when Jim Bushey suffered aflat on lap 45. With 29 laps left, as the leaders approached spinning cars,Ebersole braked as the yellow came out and got hit from behind by BuckoBranham. Both cars went to the pits setting the stage for Duquette. RichieTurner finished third. Brian Criss was fourth, just ahead of Tylor Terry.
Randy Ladue benefited from a last lap caution andsnatched a win away from runner-up Robert Gordon in the 30-lap Versatile TrailerSales Renegade feature. Nick Heywood, Lance Rabtoy and Keith Pelkey were 3rd,4th and 5th. Lonnie Rivers of Cadyville clinched the 2008Renegade champion.
Don Miller of Queensbury won the DIRT Sportsman 20-lapfeature.
Rick Doner won the NAPA Warrior feature. Butch Lamere ofPlattsburgh finished sixth and became the Warrior champion. Randy Martinclinched the Bomber championship by winning for the eighth time this season.
Airborne’s final event, the $10,000 to win Enduro 200goes Saturday, October 4.
