Herrera Doubles Up with ASCS Southwest Sweep of USA Fall Classic
Lonnie Wheatley, TUCSON, Ariz. (October 4, 2008) – New Mexico's Johnny Herrera completed a sweep of the weekend's American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region action at United Sports Arizona Race Park by racing to victory lane in Saturday night's USA Fall Classic championship feature event.
Herrera wrestled the lead away from Rick Ziehl a dozen laps into the main event en route to his ninth overall ASCS Regional victory of the season in as many starts.
Herrera was chased to the stripe by Ben Gregg, while Ziehl raced back up to third after a cut right rear tire with eight laps to go put him at the tail of the field.
Shawn Sander was fourth, with Jessica Van Dyke rounding out the top five. John Gaston was the final car on the lead lap in sixth, with Rick Boughan, Cody Cambensy, Joshua Williams and Kyle McCutcheon completing the top ten.
Boughan, Mike Rux, Jr., and Sander topped heat race action. Rux was unable to make the call for the feature when he suffered engine woes after taking the checkered flag in his heat race.
