RACING CONTINUES NEXT SATURDAY WITH THE 15TH RUNNING OF THE SOUTHERN TIER OPEN MODIFIED 50 STAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP. WINNER TO EARN $3,000 TO WIN!

KIRKWOOD, NY … After almost a month off racing will continue at Five Mile Point Speedway next Saturday, October 11th with the 15th running of the Southern Tier Open. The winner of the Modified 50 STAR Series Southern Tier Open will earn $3,000 to win. Racing gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with Modified qualifiers slated for 6:30 p.m.

In a time where businesses are cutting and trimming budgets Five Mile Point Speedway has increased the winner’s share of the STAR Series Modified finale to $3,000. The standard STAR Series purse normally pays the winner $2,000 for the victory. Five Mile Point Speedway owner Andrew Harpell remarked, “We wanted to raise the ante for the STAR Series finale and show our commitment to this series with Penn Can Speedway.”

The Modified event will allow teams to run any 92 x 13 Modified tire. Sail panels will also be allowed for this event. The race will serve as the fifteenth edition of the Southern Tier Open. The race has been held periodically since Canadian driver Ivan Little won the first Southern Tier Open in 1970. The race was held continuously through 1975 and then re-instated into the schedule again in 2000 and has been held annually since.

Last year Joey Grammes motored to the victory in the Southern Tier Open and also wrapped up the STAR Series Championship with the win. This year Penn Can Speedway regular Jeff Rudalavage holds an eleven point advantage over Craig Terrell entering the finale. Five Mile Point drivers Mile Colsten and Brian Weaver are followed by Grammes in the top five point tally.

Joining the Modified stars will be the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Pure Stocks. This huge event will be 40 laps and will pay the richest purse in the area with $1,000 going to the victor. The Race of Champions Dart Dirt Pure Stock finale will be held on Friday, October 24th as part of the National Quarter Mile Weekend. The Lightning Cats will fill out the big night of racing next Saturday night.

The Binghamton Senators and the upper Court Street Subway will be sponsoring the activities next Saturday. Max, the B-Sens mascot will be in attendance meeting with the youngsters and special fan coupons will be distributed by reps from Subway.
