Billy VanPelt Dominates Bully Hill Fall Shootout at Woodhull Raceway;

Larry Knowles, Donnie Lawson, Zack Sutton and Rich Sharpsteen III also Take Checkers

Woodhull, NY. Forty-two of the area's best modified teams signed in at Woodhull Raceway Saturday night for Bully Hill Vineyard's 3rd annual Fall Shootout. The luck of the draw put 2008 Woodhull track champion Billy VanPelt on the pole for the main event. However, at the drop of the green it was Dylan Dewert who powered by VanPelt and in to the early lead. After a series of early cautions, VanPelt took advantage of a good jump on a restart to get by Dewert and take command. Ray Bliss Jr. quickly began nosing his machine under Dewert, vying for the runner-up position. Another cluster of cautions kept VanPelt from motoring out of sight of his competitors and was allowing Roger Williams to maneuver his way toward the top five from his 12th place starting spot. After dispatching Frank Dunning for the fourth position, Williams immediately set sail for Dewert's back bumper. While VanPelt maintained a comfortable lead, another driver was making an impressive charge. Dave Dubois, who was caught up an early caution and had to take his car pit side for a tire change, was slicing his way back through the field and making his way to the front. As Bliss sawed at the wheel to keep VanPelt in sight, Williams dove under Dewert for third and Dubois slid by Dunning for fifth. As the race progressed, VanPelt found his comfort zone and began to open up a sizeable lead. After several attempts, Williams finally made his way by Bliss and Dubois followed suit by jumping up to third. With more cautions slowing the pace, the three drivers chasing VanPelt were fighting hard on each restart to maintain their positions and yet keep VanPelt within striking distance. Woodhull visitor Mike McCallum soon found his way in to the top five, as Dewert continued to slip back. In the late stages of the race, VanPelt changed his line, moving from the top of the speedway down to the ditches of the high banks. This effectively closed the door on Roger Williams' impressive charge and sealed the win for the '08 champ. Dubois capped off his wild night by taking home a hard-earned third over Bliss, who was able to run in the top five for all 35 laps. McCallum held tough for fifth, fending off a late race run from Steve Hartman Jr.

Larry Knowles darted to the early lead in the NAPA 360 Late Model event, looking to dominate the field much in the same fashion that VanPelt did in the modifieds. Mikey Wonderling and Bob Buono mixed it up for second as 2008 track champion Glenn Whritenour took to the high side of the speedway to quickly move into fourth. '07 track champ Wayne Robertson stayed glued to Whritenour's rear deck lid as the two began working around the high side of Buono and set then sights on Wonderling, all while Knowles was adding to his already sizeable lead. Knowles survived an anxious moment, as a lap machine spun directly in front of his #4 CAT Rentals machine, but Knowles was able to dodge disaster and maintain control of the race lead. Whritenour soon dove under Wonderling for second and had a few shots at Knowles' lead, as a number of cautions kept bunching the field late in the race. Knowles was strong on the restarts, and picked up his first win at the high banks of the 2008 season. Wonderling was able to work his way back under Whritenour and reclaim the runner-up spot at the checkers, with Robertson riding across a solid fourth. Buono was able to fight back the advances of Jason Knowles and take home fifth.

Donnie Lawson continued his dominance of the S&W Awards Sportsman division, picking up yet another feature win. 358 Modified aces Billy and Curt VanPelt tried their hand at the wheel of Sportsman machines, with Billy racking up an impressive second place showing. Curt VanPelt led early and was on the point when a right-rear flat ended his run for victory. Mike Jackson methodically worked his way through the field to lay claim to third. Scott Brown also saw the lead for a few early laps, and was able to hang in the top five, crossing the stripe in fourth. Another Modified pilot, Greg Galligan, rounded out the top five.

Two Woodhull regulars, Zack Sutton and Josh Nobriga, put on a thrilling display of side-by-side racing for the vast majority of the Morgan's Auto Street Stock feature, with Sutton edging Nobriga at the line for the win. Darl Ellis, Jr. continued his string of strong runs in Woodhull's open races by taking third. Ajay Potrzebowski logged in a fine run for fourth, with Woodhull veteran Cliff Moss rounding out the top five.

Rich Sharpsteen III was the class of the field, motoring away with the win in the signs Plus Mini Stock division. High banks visitor Ed Hulslander could do no better than second, as he held off the charges of Doug Colton, who finished third. Brian Grant Sr. ran up front the entire race and edged last week's feature winner, Rich Powell, for fourth.
