DAVE ZONA CLAIMS LATE MODEL KING OF THE CAN SPECIAL AT PENN CAN SUNDAY

Susquehanna, PA … The King of the Can Finale at Penn Can Speedway went into the books on Sunday with a great thirty lap late model feature headlining a great day of racing with Dave Zona of Montrose, Pennsylvania taking the $1100 to win feature. Super Stock Champion, Chris Strohl, was the super stock King with Butch Green winning the pure stock special. Kenny Underwood continued his hot streak winning the four cylinder event with Chris Stockham getting his first Penn Can win in the Xcel 600 Modified feature. First time winner, Matt Tanner, was the CRSA Modified victor.

The featured event of the day was the King of the Can late model feature. The first thirteen laps went caution free with Jeremy Randall leading the strong late model field for the first nine laps before Dan Snyder powered to the point on lap ten. Randell stayed strong regaining the lead two laps late before the first caution.

When racing continued, Dave Zona showed his strength coming to the point. Zona had Dan Snyder, Tracy Gregory, Chuck Schultz, and Dan Stone right on his rear bumper. Zona and his challengers made their way through traffic switching positions lap after lap.

In the late stages of an excellent main event, the caution slowed with only two laps remaining. Zona and Snyder battled for the front spot with former feature winner, Jamie Griffiths, coming on strong to challenge the top runners. After a late race restart, Zona was the best winning the feature followed by Snyder, Griffiths, Ben Whitaker, and Kellogg.

The super stock feature looked like another classic Penn Can battle between point champion Chris Strohl and multi-time feature winner Frank Payne. Payne’s late season bad luck continued as he retired early with mechanical problems. After Carpenter went pit side, Doug Polhamus took up the challenge fighting for the lead with Strohl. His efforts came up short with Strohl getting the win.

Butch Green is the 2008 Pure Stock Champion and showed the fans why he won the title by holding off a strong field of pure stocks to win his first ever King of the Can feature. Green’s luck started early when he drew the pole position for the main event. His main competition came early from Jon Carpenter before mechanical problems side lined Carpenter. Tom Garren was the next challenger keeping his car in Green’s tracks. Mike Codington. Making a rare Penn Can appearance, seemed to figure the best way around the oval and mounted a strong challenge to the top two runners, Green felt the challenge and held them all off to get the win.

In other action on the final day of racing for the 2008 season, Kenny Underwood won the four cylinder feature over multi-time feature winner, John Hoover. Chris Stockham won the Xcel 600 modified feature over two time winner, Butch Getz while Matt Tanner won his first ever CRSA Sprint feature event.
