Whritenour survives Cayuga County field to earn his largest cheque of his career.
Weedsport, NY…Glenn Whritenour recorded his second BRP CanAm Series win of the 2008 campaign in a rough and tumble late model contest at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Saturday of Super DIRT Week XXXVll. The ISKY Cams $2500 check was the largest ever earned by Whritenour.
Whritenour started on the pole of the 30 lap contest as a result of the top 12 qualifiers redraw. The Jasper, NY driver lead the first six laps before losing the top spot to Quinn Sutherland. Sutherland’s #36 showed on top of the scoreboard for laps seven and eight. Whritenour found traction on the bottom of turn four as the pair completed lap ten and returned to the top spot as the pair crossed the transponder loop. Just two laps later it looked like a Saturday night at Woodhull Raceway with Whritenour and Wayne Robertson locked in a torrid dual for the lead. Robertson slipped just a tick and Brady Wonderling shot past to take over second position on lap fourteen. Whritenour and Wonderling maintained one and two for the duration of the contest. The margin of victory was two car lengths.
While Whritenour and Wonderling raced at the head of the field just a few cars lengths back Scooter Pangrazio and Steve Dixon were waging a dog fight for the show position. This pair traded positions about a dozen times in the second half of the race. At the checkers it was Pangrazio third with Dixon beside him, but behind him in fourth.
Wayne Robertson recorded his best 2008 Series finish in the Pam and Stan Krise Attaboy GTO to complete the top five. The Addison, NY driver was hoping for even better after redrawing the third starting spot. As a racers he wanted better, but was OK with fifth and no damage to the race car.
Mikey Wonderling crossed the line sixth in an outstanding run from 18th in the Schuyler’s Himrod Hot Rod. Dan Cobb had never seen the Cayuga County Fair Speedway until Saturday night. The Coudersport, PA will never forget his first night at the birthplace of DIRTcar Northeast and the World Racing Group as a result of his hard fought seventh place finish. Jeff Chesebro, the defending Series point champion, had a very difficult night. Cheez salvaged an eight place finish after being caught up in somebody else’s mid-race crash. A lengthy caution period saved Chesebro’s night by allowing his crew to make temporary repairs and maintain lead lap status. The youngest of the racing Wonderling brothers, Jeremy, earned the $100 DART Machinery Hard Charger award for his run from 25th (provisional starter) to ninth. Bob Buono came from the B-Main to complete the top ten.
Steve Dixon’s 85 points for fourth Vs Jeff Chesebro’s 68 points for eighth has moved Dixon into the lead in the ISKY Championship Chase for 2008 BRP CanAm Series title. Unofficially, Dixon now has 1042 points Vs Chesebro’s 1030 points. The championship war will conclude on October 25th at Black Rock Speedway.
The A-Main starting field of 26 was set from the 38 entries by four heats and two B-Mains. Heat race winners were Dan Cobb, Scooter Pangrazio, Jon Rivers, and Glenn Whritenour. Larry Knowles and Bruce Miller were the B-Main winners. Whritenour’s preliminary race victory was worth $100. The other preliminaries paid $50 each.
