BILLY VANPELT WINS BATTLE AND THE WAR IN T3 ALL STAR SERIES ACTION AT THE WOODHULL RACEWAY.
The veteran 358 Modified pilot claims the 2008 series championship by a 1 point margin.
Lawson, Nobriga and Huslander all claim victories.
( Woodhull , NY ) Post season play continued last Saturday at the Woodhull Raceway as Bully Hill Vineyards presented the final leg of the 3rd Annual Fall Shoot out. Dewert Speed of Corning was also onboard to help sponsor the Annual Lyle Sherwood Memorial. With the T3 All Star Series 358 Modified Championship hanging in the balance, Billy VanPelt knew he had to pull out all the stops if was to win his fourth T3 title in as many years as he trailed young Tiona , Pa. speedster, Jimmy Holden heading into the season point finale at Woodhull. At the drop of the green flag, Curt VanPelt jumped into the early race lead and looked poised to win his third Lyle Sherwood Memorial in as many years. However, a mechanical problem forced Curt V. pit side near the half way mark of the 35 lap feature event handing the lead over to younger brother, Billy who had started tenth on the grid and had worked his way in to the runner up spot. Very few yellow flags slowed the event with numerous long green flag runs providing for great race action. With Billy VP comfortably in the lead a terrific battle was shaping up for the second spot between Dave Dubois and Tony Harris as the two ran side by side for several laps with Harris just nipping Dubois by a foot at the finish for second. Kevin Chilson ran a steady race to finish fourth with Ray Bliss coming from 21st starting spot to round out the top five and claim the Hard Charger Cash Award. Jimmy Holden started fourth and ran a steady race to finish sixth chased there by Brad Rapp, Roger Williams, Dylan Dewert and Scott Ferrier. For Billy VP it was T3 All Star Series for 358 Modifieds win number three on the season having swept both events at the Little Valley Speedway. Qualifying heat races went to Dewert, Holden, Ferrier and Harris with Rapp and Bliss winning the consolation events.
Donnie Lawson was able to rebound from a bone jarring 358 Modified qualifying heat race crash to win the 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event, his ninth win at Woodhull and tenth overall in 2008. Lawson took full advantage of his second row redraw feature starting spot as he passed early race leader, Larry Keegan and cruised to the win. Both Curt and Billy VanPelt picked up rides in the Crate Division and put pressure on Lawson during the closing laps but were unable to move past for the win with Curt finishing second and Billy third followed by pole sitter, Larry Keegan and Ray Bliss Jr. Mike Jackson finished sixth with Chris Silvers seventh, Frank Kline eighth, Tony Hooker ninth and Kreg Crooker rounding the top ten
Crate Sportsman heat wins went to Keegan and Lawson.
Josh Nobriga was a close second in last weeks Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stock feature event chasing Zach Sutton across the line. This week the two reversed rolls as it was Nobriga claiming his third feature event win at Woodhull in 2008 followed by Sutton, 2008 Rookie of the Year competitor, Brett Marlatt. Ajay Potrzebowski, Jeff Hellwig, Barry Payne, Josh Parker, Lee Vinson, Dave Yehl and Bobby Butcher. Russell Morseman III was a contender early in the feature racing side by side with Nobriga for the lead until he was forced pit side with mechanical problems. Heat wins were claimed by Chris McConnell and Russell Morseman III.
Finally, the Signs Plus Mini Stocks took to the high banks of Woodhull with Redline Raceway regular competitor, Ed Huslander showing the rest of the field the short way around the track. Huslander was able to jump into the early race lead and after several challenges from both Rich Powell and Rich Sharpsteen II he was able to claim his first ever feature win at the Woodhull Raceway. Sharpsteen was able to dispose of Powell in the late going but ran out of laps and steeled for a well deserved second place finish followed by Powell, Teddy Morseman Jr. Brian Grant, Eddie Mills, Shane Brown, Jim Potrzebowsky, Ron Daily Jr. and Jason Warner. Heats were claimed by Grant Sr., Mills and Sharpsteen II.
Next week at Woodhull it is the season finale featuring special 35 lap features in the Crate/Open Sportsman, 360 Late Models, Open Street and Open Mini Stock divisions. Gates open at 2:00 with racin gat 4:00 pm. Trophies are sponsored by Instant Heat Wood Pellets and Two Rivers Timber Company.
