WINNER: Pat O’Brien has been trying for several years to earn himself a victory at the Brewerton Speedway. Before Friday night, his career best was a second place finish in a 358-Modifid feature. O’Brien finally achieved his goal as he took the checkers in the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature.
"All I can say is that it’s about time,” said O’Brien after the win. “Especially after the way we ran last year, it was pretty pathetic."
RACE RECAP:
Chuck Bower led laps one and two from the pole starting position.
O’Brien took the lead on a lap two restart. He got the lead using the high line in turns three and four.
“I started to find last year that I run better on the top,” said O’Brien. “I just kind of went with it and there was a nice cushion up there.”
Matt Sheppard caught O’Brien in slower traffic and on lap 27 Sheppard passed him for the lead.
“That’s two weeks in a row with the slower cars,” laughed Sheppard. “They were racing two-by-two. I really can’t be mad through because he (O’Brien) got by me the same way that I got by him.”
O’Brien regained the lead with just four laps to go. He went to the bottom to pass Sheppard in turns one and two.
“When I was running behind Matt (Sheppard) I saw that he wasn’t as good as he normally is,” commented O’Brien. “I saw the window on the bottom speedway so I knew if I could get down there and box him in (Sheppard) on the top I would be alright.”
CAUTIONS:
The only caution of the event occured on lap two when Alan Johnson was forced into a yuke tire on the inside of turn four. The tire came out on the speedway causing the caution.
