STEVIE SCORES KEYSTONE CUP VICTORY AT WILLIAMS GROVE
MECHANICSBURG, PA -- Stevie Smith increased his lead in the
Keystone Cup Series point standings with a victory in the 30-lap sprint
car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway Fred Rahmer and
Smith started on the front row with Rahmer using the low line to take
the early lead.
Smith and Rahmer swapped the lead back and forth through turns
three and four on the first lap, but Smith took over with an outside
move exiting the second corner on lap two.
Once in front Smith began to stretch his lead while the real show
was provided by Doug Esh and Brian Montieth, both of whom started far
back in the field.
Esh, who lined up 14th, cracked the top five on the fifth lap and
was third on lap nine. He drove by Rahmer five laps later and began his
pursuit of the leader.
Following a caution period with 12 laps remaining Smith began to
pull away, but in the final laps Esh closed rapidly finishing just a car
length behind the winner.
Smith earned $5000 for his 21st career victory at Williams Grove
and first since May 11, 2007.
Esh's runnerup finish was his best of the season.
Mark Smith took third from Rahmer on the last lap.
Montieth timed just 29th of 31 entries and started 20th in the
24-car feature field, but earned the Coliseum's Hard Charger award for
passing 15 cars to finish fifth.
Mike Erdley finished sixth after a spirited duel with Montieth.
Greg Hodnett was seventh, which was where he started.
Todd Shaffer settled for eighth and retained his lead in the
Sutliff Auto Group point standings.
Jim Siegel and Cody Darrrah completed the top ten.
Alan Cole set fast time in qualifications with a lap of 16.777.
Heats for the 31 sprint cars in competition were won by Lance
Dewease, Esh and Pat Cannon.
