Saldana takes Paul Sawyer Memorial at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway; Galloway takes Budweiser Modified Feature

Jamaica, VA – Joey Saldana of Brownsburg, IN worked lapped traffic to perfection in the Paul Sawyer Memorial at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway leading flag to flag to pick up his seventh win of the season and second in a row for the driver of the Kasey Kahne owned #9 Budweiser Maxim.

Saldana held off several challenges from Sam Hafertepe Jr. and an opening lap challenge from defending race winner Jason Meyers to pick up the victory.

“It was a great effort for our team after changing an engine after time trials, good thing we changed it or we wouldn’t be standing here right now. We were pretty good on the top or the bottom while working traffic, with this new wing you definitely have to chase your car all night long, you just can’t give up on what you got because we qualified twelfth and still come out with a win,” commented Saldana in victory lane.

On the drop of the green flag the race for the lead went three wide with Jason Meyers going from fourth to battling for the lead with Joey Saldana with Saldana leading the first lap. Caution would quickly come out for David Gravel who ended upside down in turn 4.

On the restart Saldana rocketed to the lead leaving Hafertepe to battle with Meyers for second. By lap 5 Saldana was in traffic with Hafertepe closing. On lap 11 meyers closed in on Hafertepe for the battle for second with Hafertepe able to hold onto the spot.

On lap 18 Craig Dollansky took fourth from fast qualifier Lucas Wolfe. On lap 19 Danny Lasoski took over the sixth position from Donny Schatz with a pass of out of turn 2. On lap 22 Dollansky took third from Meyers out of turn 4.

With Saldana working traffic to perfection the race was for fifth as Wolfe worked to hold off Lasoski. Wolfe was able to hold on to the position and Saldana was able to take home the checkers as Hafertepe held off Dollansky on the final circuit to take the runner-up spot with Meyers and Wolfe the balance of the top five.

In other action Brandon Galloway of Gloucester, VA used a three wide pass on the first lap to gain control of the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature and then held off Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA for the victory.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Tony Quade and Brian Dobie led the field to green with the battle for the lead quickly going three wide with Brandon Galloway using the high side to take the lead and lead lap 1.

Caution would come out for the first time on lap 1 for Page Harrison who suffered a flat tire after contact. On the restart James Marshall swept to the outside making it three wide going from sixth to third. On lap 7 Marshall’s night came to an early close when he retired to the infield with mechanical problems.

On lap 16 Dan Arnold wrestled third away from Josh Harris setting his sites for Tony Quade. On lap 20 the races final caution came out for a spin by Harris who was running fourth at the time. On the restart Mark Schools dove under Brian Dobie for fourth.

On lap 21 Arnold would take second from Quade with a pass out of turn 2. Once the pass was made for second Arnold set out for Galloway who had a six car length advantage. With two to go Arnold had closed to within a car length and at the white flag Arnold looked to the inside of the young Galloway.

Galloway was up to the challenge and held off Arnold for the win. Following Galloway to the checkers were Arnold, Anthony Quade, Mark Schools and Brian Dobie.
