CHAMBERLAIN, SCHROEDER AND WOODARD TAKE APPLESEED WINS
ROSBURG, OH (May 24) – Duane Chamberlain (Sunoco American Late Model Series), Butch Schroeder (National Racing Alliance Sprint Invaders) and Earnie Woodard (Stock Cars) ruled supreme over a stout field of 107 race cars Sunday night at Eldora Speedway, as the 39th annual Johnny Appleseed Classic entered itself into the record books.
Before the 22-car ALMS field could complete the first lap, a three-car spin off of turn four created a complete restart, but after that, it was non-stop action for 25 quick laps around Eldora’s one-half mile clay oval.
Greg Johnson jumped into the early lead, with Chamberlain, Donnie Moran and Aaron Scott in pursuit.
Johnson’s lead was short-lived, as a pumped up Chamberlain powered past him coming off the fourth turn as the field completed lap four. From that point forward, Chamberlain appeared to be putting on a driving clinic as no one could match his set-up or finesse.
Behind him, Johnson and Moran set up their own duel that continued through the late stages of the event. Moran was able to get by Johnson with five laps to go, but at that point Chamberlain had checked out and without the aid of a caution flag Moran was unable to reel him in.
Following Chamberlain, Moran and Johnson across the line, were Wayne Chinn and Aaron Scott.
The NRA Sprint headliner, run in conjunction with the Sprints on Dirt (SOD), again turned the heads of the veteran railbirds as 20 quick laps rolled off non-stop.
Dustin Daggett bested J.R. Stewart into the first turn, with Schroeder third and Ben Rutan hot on his heels.
It took Schroeder three laps to dust off Stewart for runner-up honors and then another three laps before he could duplicate the trick on Daggett. Then, from that point forward, it was all his race – leaving the rest to duke it out for positioning.
By the seventh circuit, the field was in lapped traffic, which played into Schroeder’s hands even more so.
As the laps peeled off, Schroeder was on a roll, leaving Daggett to defending himself for runner-up honors, a battle he lost on the final circuit, when Stewart shot past him. Daggett was able to redeem himself for third, with Rutan crossing the line fourth and Dale Blaney in fifth.
Earlier in the night, it look as if Woodard’s night might be shortened, as smoke rolled off his Stock Car in the closing laps of his heat race. The issue was determined to be a drive shaft complication that was corrected in time for the feature to roll off, and that left bad news for the balance of the field, as Woodard was determined to best Lady Luck.
That determination paid off in big style, as, following a long absence from victory lane, he was able to make the regular jaunt from Georgetown, KY pay off in big style with a convincing win.
Scott Bowersock came on like gangbusters in the closing laps to nearly stop Woodard’s parade, but time fell short and he had to settle for second. Rob Trent, Chad Barr and Jason Kinney followed in close pursuit to complete the top five.
