Defending Champs O Brien and Billings Show Their Stuff on Opening Night at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-Sometimes they say the more things change, the more they stay the same. It was clear after opening night that Danny O Brien has every intention of holding onto his track title as he cruised to a wire to wire win on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. O Brien may have a brand new car, new owners, a new number and a new look for 2009, but the results weren't all that different. He won his heat and led all 30 laps of the 358 Modified main. However, he almost got caught with a late lap caution. Brother Tim O Brien managed to pull along side for the first time on lap 27, partly due to the Pocket Rocket having a tire going down. However, Danny pulled away for a convincing win in front of Tim and a hard charging Eric Gauvreau who made an impressive run from mid pack to become a factor. Adam Moore and Ryan Poole rounded out the fast five.
A past champ also got off to a great start in the 25 lap Sportsman main. Randy Gaudet methodically moved himself up from his 5th starting spot and then just pulled away from everyone for the win. Gaudet admitted in victory lane, they really had done little to the car since last season other than a new paintjob as he celebrated his daughters birthday in style. Adam Turner was a solid second with Matt Billings, Chris Herbison and early leader Shane Pecore in tow.
The Street Stocks put on the wildest show of the night. Nicholas Gauvreau picked up his first ever victory getting past defending champ Steve Billings on a last lap restart for the victory. The race was red flagged early as a spectacular accident off turn two sent Mark Grier's 18 car off of a tire and then flipping into the air. Grier was okay in the accident that also claimed Brian Billings and Jack Code. Kevin Fetterly with a solid run from mid pack finished third followed by Bill Code and Brock Cullen.
Gerry Oszczakiewicz ripped through the field quickly, took the lead early and then withstood a late lap challenge from Steve Barber for the win in the 16 lap Rookie feature. Chris Bakker was third with Frank Mitchell Jr. and Nolan Swamp not too far behind. Paul Billings led all 12 laps in taking the Vintage race over John McNamee and Jason Powers. Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action, next Saturday night, May 30th with a complete race program beginning at 7pm.
